Automatic Headlight Sensor - How to override?

I have a 99 Z28, and would like to know if anyone has been able to disable the automatic headlight sensor. I'd like to be able to turn the headlights off/on with the headlight switch. It's easly enough to fool the emergency brake switch, but then the "brake" light stays illuminated in the dash cluster.

Has anyone already solved this problem???

Thanks

Using the p-brake isn't good either because it disables the ABS. What you do is pull the dash cover up..and right next to your blinking securrity light is the photo light sensor thingy. Disconnect that from the dash and take the sensor off. Then all I did was put a paper clip in the two holes to complete the circuit. Hope this helps.

I just want to know why?

I have hardly touched my light switch. I think its the neatest feature personally. Why do you not like it?

I can pull into a gas station and my headlights will come on, I can be driving and it will be dusk out, still pretty damn light and my headlights would come on. In my opinion these cars look badass with the orange driving lights on and or the orange driving lights plus the fog lights on when it gets dusk. Makes the car stand out. Why ruin that with the headlights on while its still light outside?

Go to Radio Shack and buy a 10K-Ohm Resistor (1/2 watt 5% tolerance). They come in a 5 pack for less than a dollar.

The light sensor is located close to the alarm LED light. Just pop the top part of the dash up, unplug the sensor, and then bend the resistor to insert where the light sensor was, tape it up, and then you're done.

I like just turning on my fog lights at dusk, so that's why I did the mod. More details can be found by doing a search over at www.ls1.com

Exclamation I've got an easier way than that...

I guess it's similar to "6speedZ28"'s method: I popped up the dash cover, cut the 2 wires going to the photocell, and joined the wires together on the car side --- that's what I call a "free mod". If I ever decided to reverse the "mod", I'd just have to join the wires back up where they belong (and yes, I left enough wire on the sensor side to do so).

Psycho: you asked "why get rid of auto-headlights???" I find them annoying sometimes....................like when I pull up in front of a store at night, I feel like I'm a cop or something, shining the lights inside, so I like turning them off at times like that. Or, a lot of times I have to move the cars around at my house depending on who's leaving first in the morning, and I don't feel like having my car light up the whole neighbourhood while it's parked on the curb for 2 minutes.

Besides, if there's a switch with an "OFF" position, why can't I use it??? If GM wants the car to have "Automatic" lights, don't put a switch in the car........................JMO.

I used the jump wire method from LS1.com

If I can pick out a F-body or Vette coming a mile away from the DRL (yellow park lights) so can cop
