You can get it from ThunderRacing.com. It will help you record information off the computer for analysis. If you have little to no mods I wouldn't expect you to be throwing out a lot of abnormal data. In my case I'm using it to debug my misfires. It's a little tough to figure out which cylinder of 8 is misfiring without something like AutoTap.

As far as where to put the palm pilot or laptop. Most of us just throw the laptop over on the passenger seat. The point is to record your data and then review it. The new hardware is much faster, but there is a built in lag time so it's no direct replacement for gauges or anything. You can get more info from autotap.com.
