Bad Tensioner pulley...AGAIN!!!!

Bad Tensioner pulley...AGAIN!!!!
So, I just took my car in today for the second time. The same tick, the same pulley. I live in Michigan, just south of detroit where there are lemon laws. If the pulley goes bad again for a third time, does the lemon law apply to me? I've had friends that have bought lemons and had them replaced, but it was for major problems, not something little like this.

It's not too uncommon. ASP actually makes a tensioner pulley for this very reason. You might give them a call and see if they have any. (281) 261-8845 You might try getting a slightly shorter belt as well. I know that my first belt that I had to bypass the power steering at the track would jump off a few ribs after each pass. I got a 1" shorter belt, and I haven't had the problem since. How much adjustment do you have left in the tensioner w/ the current belt on?

Thanks. I take it that the ASP pulley is built a lil bit better? Ill give them a call. I dont have problems with the belt coming off though, just making that god aweful tick.

I have had my tensioner replaced twice and the pulley once. Not to mention the belt 3 times. What kind of tick noise were you having? I have heard a noise since they last replaced my pulley that almost sound slike a Diesel\Pinging type sound. Someone on here thought it might be the belt picking up slack as I applied the throttle.

The sound is hard to explain...at first it could be mistaken for a lifter, but it doesn't level out at any rpm. It's most noticable when its cold and idling a little bit higher. After it warms up though, and the idle setles down the noise stops. last time they changed both idler/tensioner pulleys and the noise was gone. 2000 miles later its back. It's the bearings in the top pulley. im actually on the phone with the dealership right now, and theyre retarded, nothing can ever get done there in a day. i dont understand it, but its really pissing me off.

I had a GM service bulletin done over 2 years ago when the pulley near my alternator squeeled at low rpm. They also replaced the belt. I don't the SB number or what it involved, but it worked (so far). This may not apply to your particular problem, but I hope it points you in the right direction. Good luck.

I had my belt replaced twice before they replaced the tensioner. Each time it would work for a few months. Finally it went from a belt squeak to a pulley squeak and they changed all 3 parts. I here this ticking or pinging but the car is warm and i only hear at low RPM and only for the first second that I apply the throttle. So if anyone can find the TSB on these things I would love to see it as the dealer keeps claiming all is well.

I just got off the phone with the dealership and theyre claiming this noise is normal, but obviously...they replaced it once and the noise stopped, now they claim its normal. am i the only one that thinks this is retarded? i think not. so im just going to but the part from murrays and be done with it. lifetime garautee.

There's 2 TSBs - one for each belt!
*Bulletin No.: 99-06-01-007 Date: May, 1999
Subject: Accessory Drive Squeak (Replace Idler Pulley)
Models:
1997-99 Chevrolet Corvette
1998-99 Chevrolet Camaro
1998-99 Pontiac Firebird
with 5.7 L Engine (VIN G - RPO LS1)
Condition: Some customers may comment on a squeak noise coming from the engine or accessory drive while the engine is running. This squeak may vary in volume and may be heard inside the vehicle with the windows up and the radio on.
Cause: The idler pulley dust shield may distort during assembly due to torquing of the mounting bolt. This distortion may cause the Idler pulley dust shield to contact the bearing race and the pulley resulting in the squeak noise.
Correction: A new idler pulley assembly is available with a thicker dust shield to prevent the distortion of the dust shield. The previous dust shield thickness is 0.61 mm. The new dust shield thickness is 1.37 mm.

Here's the other one:
BULLETIN NUMBER: 00-06-01-008
DATE: March 2000
SUBJECT: Accessory Drive Belt Squeak/Chirp Noise (Install New Double Row Idler Pulley, Generator Bracket and Serpentine Belt)
MODELS:
1998-2000 Chevrolet Camaro
1998-2000 Pontiac Firebird
Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint Y2107225 with 5.7L V8 Engine (VIN G - RPO LS1)
CONDITION: Some customers may comment on a squeak/chirp noise coming from the accessory drive serpentine belt. The noise will be most noticeable at idle and low engine speeds.
CAUSE: The serpentine belt squeak/chirp noise may be caused by misalignment between the idler pulley and crankshaft pulley. A slight rocking motion of the idler pulley causes the misalignment, which results in noise.
CORRECTION: To correct this condition on vehicles built prior to the above VIN breakpoint, install the new generator bracket, double row idler pulley and serpentine belt following Service Manual procedures.
Hope this helped!

I went up to the dealership yesterday to pick up my car, and i talked with the manager of service, and theyre going to replace the pulley. They keep giving me **** because the valvetrain is naturally load, but i told the guy...do you think i paid $28000 so i can drive around in a fast car that people say has a bad lifter. makes sense right? wtf?

I called my dealer as well. Once you said you had a "Bad Lifter" sound it clicked. I have the same thing between 1.5 RPM and 2 RPM and it didn't start until they replaced the pulley and stuff. SO I went from a horrible squeal to a lifter noise. Of course the dealer thinks it's the lifter but sure right whatever. They are going to "look it over" Monday and see what they can find. It's amazing how the dealer never finds what is wrong when it comes to warranty issues.
