Break in period
#3
Nice??? F#ck "nice"!!!
Honestly, I just picked up my new car two weeks ago, I've put on about 2000km (~1200 miles) so far, and I hardly followed the "recommended" (owner's manual) break-in "instructions". The book recommends driving at speeds "55mph or less for the first 500 miles" (88km/h for 805km). That's BS!!! Most cars (unless mine's the only one ) already have a few miles on them by the time you take possession. Do you not think that at some point in those first few miles the car was hammered on, or revved up (or taken above 55mph while being transported from the plant to the trucks to be shipped??) As well, the book says not to maintain the car at one speed or RPM for an extended period of time, but at less than 50mph, there's not a whole lot of room for variance.
After I had about 150km (100 miles) on my car, I had it on the highway (while driving to work) and I was doing speeds well over 55mph --- speeds more like 75 - 85mph --- and you know what?? That car is running just fine still. I'm not saying it's good to run at WOT within the first while (and if so, at least not for a long time), but I certainly didn't pamper the car, and I don't think (nor does my dad - a ~30 year licensed mechanic) that it will hurt the car/motor to run the car a little harder than the "recommended" way before the "recommended" break-in period is finished.
IMO, drive the car how you're going to drive it. If you rarely drive over 55mph anyway, then don't do more than 55mph - that's fine. But if you know that at some point, you're going to really give the car the boots sometimes, then f'ing drive it. Besides (not that this is justification, but), you've got warranty, and if the motor is gonna blow up, then let it blow up, and it'll be replaced for you.
And in regards to oil changes??? That's the only thing I agree with the manual on --- no need for an oil change until 5000km (3000 miles). Change it sooner if you like, but for me? I'll do it when it's due.
Just my $.02. HTH.

I agree on the oil changing deal. The service manager where I got my car said to just change the oil at 3000 miles, I changed it at 2850 (I was going on a trip) and switched to Mobil 1, she's running great and not using a drop of oil.
I don't agree with the under 55 MPH at all, again the service manager told me to just vary the speed for the first 500 miles and I varied the hell out of it, from 10 to 120 MPH, the car runs sooooooooooo good, no engine knock, no piston slap, NOTHING but ***** out power, she is really wearing in nice and I didn't do the "nice" break in either. My two cents. Love these LS1's, they're BEASTS! Later.......Brent

Ummm, "eddie", did you have anything to add in those last two posts?? Or did you just really agree and thought you'd re-post both "Brentasan's" and my posts?!
Just wondering!
BTW: any more thoughts on break-ins? Anyone else agree/disagree with what's been said so far?
