Buying '98 Z28 M6 w/ All Options, Need Info

My name is Tyler and I am new to the board.

I am going to be buying my friends 1998 Z28 M6 w/ T-Tops, Leather, Borla Full Catback Exhaust System w/ Dual Quad Tips, 57K Miles, 20% Window Tint, $400 Alpine Deck, and Brand New $1,000s worth of Tires (Can't remember brand) Z-Rated @ 186MPH; all for $14,500.

No matter what it has I am still buying it because I have wanted a Camaro since I was little and now have the perfect chance and I am 19 yrs old.

My question about what it has is how do I tell if its an A4 or not?

Thanks for any and all info and responses. It is greatly appreciated.

You kidding?? Look at the shifter, and check under the hood for a tranny dipstick.

Bizarre question. This is your friend's car and you don't know if it is a manual or auto? I take it you've never ridden with him. It doesn't sound like you even know what a manual transmission is. I guess you're going to find out fast when you (try) to drive it home. Anyway, have fun with your new toy.

Auto is referred to as A4.
Stick is referred to as M6.

I'm sure you wanted a reply that wasn't smartass. There it is.

There are several methods of telling that. One of them is that if it has three pedals it is M6 but if it only has two, it is A4.

Glad to be of help!

Welcome Tyler,

A Z28 is either an M6 (6-speed manual) or an A4 (4-speed automatic). Since you can only have one type of transmission they're mutually exclusive, you can't have an M6 that is also an A4.

One thing to note, is that your friend is bending you over on price. Blue Book value on a '98 Z28 with those miles is right around $12k. I don't see how an Alpine HU, tires, and a Borla catback can raise the value another $2.5k. I'd offer him $13k at the most.

That is very true. However, if you look at his sig, I guess he already bought it.

I paid 14.8 for my bone stock 00 Z28 w/35K miles 7 weeks ago...

As long as he is happy with the price and the car...

Sorry if the question concerning if it is an A4 or not is a dumbfounded question, but in all honesty I knew when people say M6 they are talking about a 6-speed manual transmission.

On the other hand, I have never heard of when people say A4 that it is an automatic 4-speed tranny. I just assumed A4 was the type of gears, not that it was an automatic.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I searched and searched for the answer and after not finding anyone or anywhere saying A4 ment automatic, I thought I should ask.

By the way, when I checked the blue-book on his car along with a carfax report, the b-b said just about $14K when I looked not even a week ago on both Kelly Blue-Book and NADA Guide.

Last of all, I havn't bought the car yet although I did put it in my sig because as I said in my first post, I am buying it no matter what. He is a good friend and its a good car.

Thanks though for those of you that were polite about my mis-informed question. I most greatly appreciate it.

Really? Did you price it at kbb.com? I just looked on there this morning and the given value for a "private party" sale on a '98 Z28 wih the miles you stated came in at just under $12k. I made sure to check all of the options that you mentioned too... Weird.

Anyway, it doesn't matter. If you're happy with the car and the price, that's what matters. Congratulations, they're fun cars to own.

I paid 15k from a dealer for a 99 Z28 with 20k miles... I wouldn't pay 14500 for a 98 wiith 57k miles. I saw a 99 with 57k miles here for 12k.

Yeah, after about 5-6K worth of rebates and employee/supplier/whatever discounts etc.
