Cam+Converter+California Question......

Ok. Let me get out the basics:
1. 02 z28 A4
2. I live in California
3. Car is my street car

I was planning on getting a 3500 stall. My cousin said I should take into consideration the power options i could be adding in the future. He said that if I put a 3500 stall in now, and later add more power, via hds and cam or forced induction, that the stall limit would be raised above the 3500 mark i was looking for. How true is this? If true, how drastic of a change. What stall should i get if I plan on adding more power in the future, but i also what to turn my high 12's to mid 12's. Also, any suggestions on a cam. I know I have to go with something like TR224, i've seen people mention, but are there any more brands , or whatever, that people in California have had in thier car and passed smog? Are heads important to get too? Im looking for a decent power increase, but i not looking to completey rebuild my engine. Just looking for streetability, more robust idle, and faster than it currently is. thnx

Re: Cam+Converter+California Question......

Where a given converter flashes depends on torque produced and weight of the vehicle. 3500 is basically an estimate of where it will flash. On different cars it may be higher or lower. It "stalling" higher would actually be beneficial with more power.

Get the converter and a trans cooler, install them, and don't look back.

For cam suggestion, I'll mention the CheaTR. Other brands? Texas Speed and Thunder Racing are both Comp grinds. Futral is cam motion (IIRC) and the there is also Crane and Lunati. There are many other shops with their own grinds also like MTI and LPE. Just learn how to figure overlap and go by that. You'll want negative overlap to be smog friendly. I can't remember the formula or I'd give it to you. Try a search on ls1tech.

Will I need to get headers also, or is the stock manifold fine?

Anything other then shorties are not smog legal. From what I've read, shorties are not the the money as far as power gained is concerned.

The whole issue comes with long and mids moving the catalytic convertor, which is the big no no. I imagine if you can find someone who "overlooks" that fact and maybe just runs a sniffer you may be able to pass.

One thing you should keep in mind living in CA, there are some counties that do not have a regular smog requiremnet if your vehicle is registered there, only when you buy/sell the car. Do a check and see if you have some family/friends who live in one.

Re: Cam+Converter+California Question......

Ok. I knew LT headers were not legal, and I figured shorties were a waste. Most of my family live in the Bay Area, so im not gonna worry about getting around smog. Thnx for you advice, I think Im in the right direction now!

Re: Cam+Converter+California Question......

00 up manifolds flow very close to what shorties do.

Since you're restricted there, I highly recomment the CheaTR cam from Thunder Racing. It was designed for restricted exhausts.

Re: Cam+Converter+California Question......

Do you know off hand what kind of gains could i get from the CheaTR cam? I kind of wanted a little rougher of an idle. Im not sure if the TR224 even has a rougher idle or not. Are heads really needed along with a cam? Would heads make a big difference with either cam?

Heads make a big difference on any cam.
Yes, the 224 will have a choppier idle (more overlap).
