catback really necessary?
I know it is illegal to run w/o cats. Who here does it anyway?
I was told to just say if ever caught that I am coming from a weekend of racing and am going to put them on when I get home.

I run no cats with a cutout!! Pulled once for being too loud, told to fix exhaust and get the ticket signed by a cop and pay $22. All I gotta do is cap it to get that ticket signed, so it's all good. They didn't even ask anything about cats, they just said I was too loud.

Never tell the cop your coming back from a weekend of racing. Tell him you lost a clamp and the exhaust isn't running into the muffler and theat you have a appointment to get it fixed in 3 days. Chances are the cop won't climb under the car and see no cat.

The law in MN is more concerned with other things than your cats. The most they are worried about with the condition of your car is the sound level and tint. I work on my Sheriff's Posse and know alot of officers/troopers. This is what they look for and no officers that I know even know what a cat is or where to look for it.
As for the cat-back... They are a waste of money unless you have alot of mods, like heads and cam. You will get the same power and sound from just replacing the clogged up stock muffler. Unless you are looking for alot of sound or are going for big power, you don't really need to remove your cats. Removing them adds alot of sound to your car.
Good luck

Straight pipes from the headers is what I had in mind. That's why I wanted a feel for what to say if ever pulled over and had to explain why the hell my '02 is so damn loud!!!

Yeah, from my experience, you won't be able to say much to help you if they pull you for the car being too loud.
The law here is trained to use violations like that as a reason to pull you over and snoop for larger violations.
So if you like to be chemically altered or have any other contraband in you car... weapons for example... Don't run a loud exhaust. If you are on the straight and narrow when it comes to the law, then you could chance it. You might get pulled, but if you are courteous with the officer and let him snoop, he would probably cut you a break assuming he doesn't find anything.
Get smart with him or impede his snooping, and he won't let you off.
Good luck

here in TX its supposed to be big time issue.. If you do get caught without them (usually when you are found around a street racing area) then you are in hella deep doo... hehe
Heard many a horror story.. Fact is that I dont see them as being that much of a restriction that I would want to deal with crap like an impounded car or felony citation..
Do you really think Hi-flo cats are robbing you of 20 hp? I dont..
i dont think our stock ones flow that bad either..
