When a converter locks up, it gives you a true 1:1 ratio by not being able to slip. It makes it so that the crankshaft and transmission vary directly with RPM's. This is a great feature because you can run a really big stall, such as my Yank PT4400, and still retain your excellent gas mileage on the highway. Ed Wright has my converter locking up at 30 MPH with regular driving, so that helps a lot on in-town gas mileage.
