Cutout or Exhaust system ?

Whats the difference in performance between the cutout and an aftermarket exhaust (loudmouth, borla, flowmaster, etc)

I know from reading and reviewing threads posted, the cutout gives you an increase of HP but a loss of torque. Also, the pipe cuts out after the cats. (Pls correct if I am wrong) So there is no need of an exhaust system.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a cut-out and an aftermarket exhaust system ? Which yields bigger gains ?

As always, thanks for the information

i lost only 2 ft-lb of torque with the cutout, and that's pretty much across the board, from low end to high end. don't think that's too bad with all the bad publicity these get for losing torque.

checked out your ride, really nice. I like the matching black rims
Just a questions for you. Why do you have a cutout AND an aftermarket muffler ? If your cutout is open, doesnt it make your muffler useless ?
thanks

thanks, man. yeah, it doesn't make sense does it? well, i got the flowmaster right after i bought the car, a friend of mine told me it would sound nice. i didn't know any better at the time and had never even heard of a cutout at the time. about a year later, i discovered the cutout, and liked the sound much better. so yeah, if i had known about the cutout at the time i bought the flowmaster, i wouldn't have bought the flowmaster.

good catch...

i'll take a shot at it since nobody else is. i'm sure someone will correct me.

basically, the cutout is the best, performance wise, over any catback system. logically, it has to be: no muffler is less restrictive than ANY muffler out there.

so, if all you're after is performance, cutout is the way to go.

i think the reason that a lot of people go for the catbacks is that they don't like the sound of the cutouts (too loud, too unrefined, etc...) some of the catbacks out there sound pretty nice. so in some cases, it may make sense to have a cutout and a catback: cutout for the strip, catback for everyday driving when you want something that sounds better than the stock exhause, but not as loud as cutout.

hope this helps

.... I just run the stock SS catback on my Ls1 and run the cut out open when I want to make some noise...

I could not live with the sound of headers and no cats all the time....so..I love having the stock muffler

Well, you can't gain HP without gaining torque somewhere. HP is a function of torque.

You dont really need to jack up the car, you have enough space underneath to crawl and unscrew 3 wingnuts. It takes about 45 sec or less to do, depending on where ur cutout is located.

Wait a sec......you might have to jack up the car if ur car is lowered.
