Post Cutting out two cylinders?

Ok, I remember back when the 98 Camaro and Firebird Came out with the LS1 motor. Now I also remember reading something about the ability to actually shut off 2 cylinders or something like that. It was something to do incase your teenager or perhaps a valet parker got in your car. Thinking they would hotrod it. Some kind of switch that would disable 2 cylinders. Which would reduce horsepower and enable better gas mileage on the highways. Am I just crazy? Or did I really read this somewheres? Was it an option on 98 up Camaros and Formalas?

I think I know what you are talking about.
Gm has experimented in the past with "displacement on demand". they had it on caddillacs in the eighties and it was not sucessful. There was no switch, the car would shut down 2 or 4 cylinders if they werent needed. Under a load, all eight would be used, but going down the highway under a light load, only 4 or 6 would be used. The LS1 never had this. I have heard that GM is again trying to make this work, it is supposedly a much smoother transition when cylinders are activated or deactivated.

That would suck...think about your expensive exhaust system you put on your car. As soon as those cylinders shut off, your car loses that muscular rumble and sounds like a 6 banger.

I've never heard of it in the LS1. I heard the ZR1 had this. It was either a cylinder shutdown or a spped governor. Chevy is expirementing again with the new Vette engine. This thing has electrically actuated valves. It would close both valves and kill fuel and spark. Rumor has it placed at over 30 mpg and 500+ hp.

You can't actually turn them off but the pcm does fire every other cylinder if the car overheats to keep it from damaging the motor.

Yup, ZR1 had the ability to cut power with a valet switch. It shut off the second set of injectors and wouldn't let you get the full 405 horsepower.
