Question Do I have to break-in the engine?

Hello guys,

I am pretty sure this question has been asked. But I have to know so that I don't f*** up my Camaro.

My Dad just recently bought a 2002 Camaro SS for me and himself. It is brandnew and I have heard that you need to have 5000 miles on the engine to be doing crazy thing with it or if not crazy you know like revving it over 3000 RPM and not go like 100 MPH or something. So basically what I'm asking is do I have to wait till 5000 miles are on the engine so that I can let the RPM go pass 3000 or like go too fast?

Question

What happens if I do go voer 55 and accelerate real hard and stuff when the engine isn't broken? Will it be really damaged or just a little?

BTW, thanks for all the help you guys, especially MonteSS427 and BlackHawk T/A.

NP. I am MonteSS427 BTW.

Your engine won't be damaged if you go over 55mph but it is always better to play it safe until things are broken in before you start to be hard on it.

Its a good idea to take it easy on your car until you get 1000 - 1500 miles on the car. Change the oil at 500.

Some people have taken there car directly from the dealership to the dragstrip (i.e. ~50 miles on it) and there car is fine. Most people would rather not take the chance, and rather play it safe.

Having actually built my own engines, I can say that you don't need to break it in. If an engine is going to fail, it will fail within 10 minutes of starting it and driving it.

My last engine: I started it up, ran it for 15 minutes, changed the oil and beat the hell out of it.

I had only 250 miles on my car and took her to the track (13.7@103. Not bad for the first time ever at the track and being a female. ) Now she has 48,000 on her as I drive it everyday. Runs like a charm. Plus we still go to the track on occasion.

Man after reading all these replies where everyone is saying there is no need to break in the engine, I so wanna get in the car and go race some rice rockets .

And If I tell me Dad bout this he's gonna go start taking advantage of the 325 horses under the hood. Damn it's so tempting too with a f*cking Camaro SS. Well I guess I'll play it safe and wait till it has like 5000 or 6000 miles on it.

I really appreciate all your help guys thank you very much! And guys (and girls), remember to save your rear tires .

Lightbulb

When engines are built and dyno tested, they run them for about an hour at idle first, then tear them down, inspect everything, put them back together, run them for a bit and slap them on the dyno. Probably the equivalent of 100 miles on the engine and they are already running them hard. So no, you don't have to wait as long as most people say. I say as soon as it hits 1000 miles, change the oil and let her rip!

I just got my Z-28 3 weeks ago and I am gonna break it in for 500 and have the oil change at 1000. Of course the CHP where I live is using Z-28 for highway use and I'm sure there engines aren't broken in.

Hey blacknight,

I'm kinda slow so I didn't quite understand what you meant by saying the thing about the CHp using the Camaros and them not being broken in. Do you mind explaining it to me?

Thanks for all the help you guys. I'm gonna change the oil at 500 miles and after 1000 miles I'm gonna drive it like it should be driven .
