Dyno test for Christmas!

Hi, newbie here. I bought my brother's 2000 Camero z28 LS1 a few months ago (still getting used to left hand drive in the UK) and a turbo-b**tard nutter friend of mine bought me a dyno test for Christmas with a view to getting me into mods and tuning (not to mention an honorary membership of his "power" volvo owners club - they all want to drive the V8 lol!).

I'm not sure I want to go down that route till I learn how to handle the beast but since it's paid for anyway, anything I should know about what I'm getting and what if any preparation I should do beforehand?

Incidentally, I believe the UK version is de-tuned to 289HP - probably a good idea for an old blind deaf and stupid git like me...

Treat me gently please, my last car was a Honda Prelude

Cheers
Vitch

Step 1: Learn to spell Camaro.

Step 2: In preparation for the dyno test, get a full tank of your favorite premium fuel.

Step 3: Enjoy the car!

I don't think you need to do anything else.

Re: Dyno test for Christmas!

are we talking a dyno test ...or a dyno TUNE??

neither should really require anything

Re: Dyno test for Christmas!

Laughing my head off! An American just (rightly) corrected my English! Thank you for that, I must now go commit suicide.

But before I do, we only have 2 kinds of petrol here - 95 octane or 98. Does it make much difference? Every car I've ever driven seems to work fine with 95 and since that's quite a bit cheaper and my gas-guzzler isn't so frugal as my Honda, I'll probably keep using it unless it makes a big difference...

As for the dyno, I think it's just a test - I get 3 runs on a rolling road which I gather establishes my CAMARO's current performance. Best out of 3 or an average I suppose.

Actually, I was kind of hoping someone would tell me what the results would mean - I get a graph but I've never had much interest in this kind of thing before and I really don't know what it means.

By the way, KakeRobb, I love my new car! It feels like I'm being launched every time I put my foot down and it scares the crap out of me every time I go round a bend. The back end skips and jumps like a girl in a playground but it's time I got to grips with rear wheel drive They're really rare over here too, so everyone that sees it seems kind of curiously in awe.

Oh yeah - my brother sold it so he could get a Saleen ('scuse spelling). Brutish looking but a bit plastic in my opinion. I like mine more

Cheers

95 or 98, I belive eurpoeans have different octane ratings and they are a little higher. LS1's will require the top premium fuel which in your country is 98.

If your fuel is the same as it is in the states just use the 95. Highest I have around me is 93 and that works out great.

You should get a cutout on the exhaust just to hear the engine a little better and scare the bejesus out of most people on the road. Take this from one of the lads from the colonies.

Don't worry, Camaro is a word in French and Spanish, but it doesn't mean anything in English.

Is the octane measured using the (R+M)/2 method? On this side of the water, the pumps at the station are marked with the method used. The marking is usually very close to the octane rating itself.

The resulting graph tells you how much power your car generates throughout the RPM range. LS1 engines are severely underrated, and with this information you'll know just how underrated yours is. If you post your graphs online and show them to us, we can tell you how yours compares.

You spelled Saleen just fine, but I do have to call you out on another error -- it's JakeRobb, not KakeRobb.

Your brother, in my humble opinion, is off his rocker. I hope he's happy.

Re: Dyno test for Christmas!

Ah, now J and K being next to each other on the keyboard I think that was a typo and I'll blame being tired for missing that on the read-through and just say "Sorry JakeRobb!"

I'm afraid pumps this side of the water don't say how the octane is measured so I have no idea how they compare with US...

Actually, my brother was trying to get a Corvette but had 6 months of problems trying to get the model he wanted exported. I don't know all the details but eventually he gave up and went for the Saleen instead. Which meant I missed summer in the Camaro and the chance to use the T-top

Well, my baby goes to the rolling road on Monday and I'll put the results up here for you to see!

Until then thanks for the help!
