Engine noise and oil consumption... what's normal for an LS1?
I've owned LT1's up till a couple weeks ago, so pardon my ignorance. I've read that the LS1 can suffer from "piston slap" as well as oil consumption. Well, what's normal limits for this?
More specific, my 02 Z has 5000 miles. It has used 1/2 a quart of oil in a week! The engine is not leaking either. On startup I can hear all kinds of "noise" from the engine. It mainly sounds like loud lifters and valves. It will give an occasional knock sound as well, when the engine is "freewheeling" during gear changes on the manual transmission. It gives some backpressure popping through the exhaust at the same time as well. After the car heats up the knock sound disappears as does the backpressure popping. The valvetrain is still pretty noisy by my standards.... much louder than my LT1 Camaro was.
The oil pressure stays a constant 40-45psi at idle (@800RPM) and vaires from 50-70PSI during acceleration.
Appreciate any insight to this. The car's under warranty....so if this sounds like a problem, I can let the "experts" at the local dealer screw with it (and probably not fix anything )
Thanks in advance.

A quart in 1 week Other then that welcome to LS1 world.Everything you mentioned is as normal as a LS1 gets. 1 quart in less then 2K miles Id wonder a little. If you change your oil every 3K youd never miss a quart. LS1s are noisey. If it still sounds like marbles after it reaches operating temps, have it checked out. But be prepared to hear every excuse in the book from the dealer. Odds are the dealership wont know there as*es from their collective elbows

Well a quart a week is insane..your car is very new give it some break in miles its on warranty anyway and see it should be about a quart every 3000 to 5000 I would think depending on how hard you drive it..I keep mine revving up there and drive quite a few high speed runs with it just messing around.I usually use synthetic oil..it seems to not burn thru or get sucked in intake quite as much.I changed my pcv to newest part number but think
your car should already have it.It seemed to help some.
Also my car definitely knocks when cold and after sitting in garage for week or so I think. It does seem to go away when warm so guess its just the usual piston slap that most ls1 cars have..I can live with it since its gone when fully warmed up.The injectors in these gms are very loud, especially compared to ford injectors and some ls1 have noisy little fuel evap valve that makes loud tick on drivers side..also think because the blocks are aluminum and the heads it tends to transmit even more noice.I just ignore it these days.My car if off warranty and if something goes then just rebuild with forged pistons ,etc.Your 2002 should be better for cold piston noise..thought they were putting some coated pistons in there with different rings and tighter clearances..
