We used to have a C5 99 Vette A4...Drove it from Council Bluffs, IA to Oakland, CA and averaged 32mpg and average speed of 69mph...It is possible, you just gotta be patient and use the cruise control...
BTW- The car tells you all that so thats how I know I am correct...

Wanna drive get an M-6, wanna ride get an A-4. And yes there are times I wish I had an auto stuck in traffic, on it hard stock clutch giving up the ghost and the pedal staying on the floor.Benefits far out weigh the downsides IMHO

Cool

If you want fuel economy then a muscle car is not for you. Fuel consumption is not and was not an issue for me when I bought my T/A

True, but its a damn pleasant suprise when you go on a road trip, and get better gas mileage than your buddy thats following you in his Civic HX.

It's my opinon that you can't go wrong either way. If your getting a relitivly new car I would get an Auto, they are great, there a lot smoother and faster than M6. but you don't want an auto that somebody beat up for 30,000 miles and got rid of. I pretty much hate driving my m6 in town because of stopping on all the hills but i really like the manual because you can just let the car cruise to a stop sign or up and down hills and get excellent efficientcy. If your going to race get the m6 because they are cheaper to repair. auto's are a lot better for towing. the m6 is a PITA because if you don't release the clutch right then it's clunk or jerk, it gets old. also the m6 has an extra gear so that makes driving a little easier. just test drive both.

I understand fuel economy is something that doesnt go hand in hand w/a Camaro, but it is nice to know it is there though. As for a car, I plan on modding, but not racing to heavily. I am really leaning toward a 6spd now. Thanks guys. Keep them coming

Banks, sorry, been away for awhile..
After I crunched the numbers, my ave. fuel mileage worked out to 35.3 mpg, door to door, Vegas to El Paso. My average speed on the highway was between 75-90, depending on the area I was driving in. Lotsa open desert on that trip! I just dropped it into 6th when I topped 75, and let it do the rest!
...And yes, it still pulled nicely in 6th, when I had to pass someone.

It's really not that big of a difference, you're only talking about maybe .15 . Hell, if you're that worried about gas mileage, there's always a 3-banger Geo lying around somewhere....

Just my $.02,

Thanks for all of your opinions. I am going to look at a 98 SS, NBM w/white leather, 6spd, and 48K tomorrow. Hopefully the numbers will work out. It already has the Level 1 SLP package and the guy that traded it in has a programmer and MTI lid that I can have for cheap.

WTF??? I am in 6th by 40mph.. maybe my 2002 is different from your 2000... Truck cam and all.. but No where near stalling.. I have gone into 6th at 35ish as well. I shift 1st->4th->6th.. Often as I have to drive all residential to and from work.

It's your choice, but I have had Camaros with M4, M5 and M6 dating back to 1968. I learned to drive on a 3spd on the column (now that dates me!). It seems like you are truly driving when you have a manual trans. I currently have a 02 Z28 with a 6spd. I love it and hope to keep this car a long time. I purchased my first Camaro when I was 18. It was a 4spd SS RS Convertible (wish I still had it!). The dealership put the car out front for me to drive off with, and as I did, all the salesmen were watching to see how an 18 year old girl would drive this car. They didn't think I could drive it. Well, they got a show! That was 35 years ago and I'm still going strong, only with the 6spd now!

Get The Six Speed!!

I have a 2001 Z28 auto and not getting a six speed is my biggest regret. I didn't learn how to drive stick untill after I got my car. I learned on my friends 95 M3 and from that time forth i've been kicking myself in the *** for not going manual. To compare the fun factor between the 2 is almost absurd. I'm not putting down my car or automatics because I know with the right upgrades they can be made quite fast, I am just saying that I think id be having way more fun right now if I had a manual.
