Just find a muffler shop that can do mandrel bends in the pipes, and get them to make you some 3" pipes from the y-pipe back to the axle, and get a $35 FlowTech 3" cut-out. Best sounding exhaust, cheapest exhaust, and the most free-flow out there Can't go wrong w/ it IMO.

I've got a flowmaster muffer with a 3" pipe from the y-pipe collector to the muffler then 2 x 2.5" pipes out. It may not be the best flowing, in fact, I'm sure it's not, but it was cheap and sounds great. Check it out here:

$$$GMMG$$$ loudest and most badass. But don't go LTs with those, you'll wake up everyone including the dead....really you will. But the GMMG is ridiculous in price and they only accept cash or equivelant, not credit cards
As for other catbacks that are loud, look at the loudmouth (wonder why they named it that???) also the Borla system, it has 3 plates to choose how loud you want to go.
Or you could go the cheapest route and get an electric cutout from www.quicktimeperformance.com you could sit in your car and adjust the volume for as loud as you want it or as quiet as you want it.

Dynomouth is the best sound by far.
The only way to go cheaper than the DM is to go without a muffler as suggested above, the problem is that the sound is raspy, not deep that way.
Also, don't worry about the stock 2.75" exhaust, have an aftermarket system that is .25" larger doesn't do anything for our cars (without heads and cam)... The stock pipes are mandrel bent stainless, the stock muffler is the restriction.
I have some Dynomouth sound clips on page 2 of my website.
Good luck

IMO, the best bang-for-the-buck system out there is the Hooker 3" cat-back. I had one on my '98 T/A, and it was GREAT! It's been consistently proven to flow very well, both at the track and on the dyno. The muffler also bolts up to the exhaust pipe, so it gives you the ability to remove the muffler and tips at the track with the simple removal of three bolts. The sound is also the best I've personally ever heard on an LS1. I bought one after hearing one on my best friend's '98 Z28. This is the system that we sell the most of at our shop because of its performance and price.

GMMG
Definitely GMMG has the best tone, perfect loudness and is the most bada$$ IMHO! It is absolutely worth every penny. Not so much head throbbing drone/interior resonance as others like the Loudmouth! I don't have a sound clip, but when i heard it in person it made my decision very clear that i was buying GMMG. Ask around if there is anyone in your area with GMMG to hear it in person for yourself. If no luck there check out www.gmmginc.net and listen to what they have there. Good luck on your decision. Go GMMG and have no regrets.

Real Dual Exhaust
Have any of you thought about doing away with that power and torque robbing "Y" pipe exhaust system and installing a real dual exhaust system on your car? You get a lot more performance. I have a real dual exhaust on my SS that exits out the rear of the car just like the regular stock pipes and it is quiet inside the car with no drone. Those that exit out under the car before the axle doesn't come close to my exhaust system. I can ride down the road and talk to my friend in the seat beside me or listen to the radio, because as I stated earlier, it is quiet inside my car. Now, outside is another story. I have a sound that no "Y" pipe exhaust system can touch. The sound that only a real dual exhaust system can deliver. I will never, NEVER use a "Y" pipes exhaust system on anything ever again. I'll go with a real dual exhaust system every time.
