I got an extended warranty when I purchased mine. What I didn't realize is the company the dealer used wasn't so popular. A year later, when I moved to Michigan, my factory warranty ran out. So, I found out the little things about extendeds that they don't tell you. Had two problems with the steering columns. A few months ago, the locking spring snapped, so my wheel wouldn't lock after I took the key out. They fixed it...after I paid the $50 deductable. Then, a few weeks ago I had a problem with the chip in the key and the ignition cylinder. Again, I pay the $50 and I find out that I only get 1 new key. The company's position was, "It's only our job to get the car running again." So, if I want a 2nd key, it comes out of my pocket. So, if you plan on getting an extended, I say 3 main things to look for are:

1. Make sure you know what is covered under the extended.
2. Make sure you know if there's a deductable and how much it is.
3. Make sure it's a reputable company that's recognized pretty much anywhere and won't take the cheap way out.

Just my .02

I agree with you 100% (I have the Diamond coverage)... made a $1500 nightmare disappear. I thought I had a simple steering pump leak, so while getting other work done I had the dealer check it out.

Turned out the rack itself was leaking and needed to be replaced - along with a couple of other issues not as dire. Warranty Gold covered replacement of my leaking power steering rack ($675 just for the rack itself ), p/s lines, p/s pump, a (new to me) transmission leak, a rear pinion seal leak (another surprise), AND LABOR. The Warranty gold rep had to come out to inspect my car before clearance was given (took just a day), but it was well worth it in my view as the inspecter decided to p/s pump problem was tied to the p/s rack failure, thereby covering the pump too

Just be sure whatever warranty you get, that you review everything that is covered, and more importantly what's not so there are few surprises - it may even be possible for you to get one through GM if your so desire...

Not all of us are mechanically inclined - For this, an extended warranty is a good "peace of mind" investment.

Good Luck...

I checked it out. Like $1200 for 1 year. Whatever.

The aforementioned powersteering rack from NAPA is $174. Looks like somebody made money off the insurance company.

These policies are worth it sometimes. My father got a new engine for a $100 deductible once because the "only 3 years old and 35000 miles car" had the original oil filter the first time he went to change it.....

You obviously looked at something wrong, because I'm on my 3rd policy now and they've always been 1150-1250 for 3 years. They're also $0 deductable. I don't know about you, but I feel much better taking my car to the dealer to get work done, especially when you're not the one paying for it.

I will have to recheck out that site, but as far as the dealer, no way. They are crooks, and unless you have a specialty (like a ZR1), any schmoo tech gets to wrench on it. I have worked on cars for 10 years, both at a shop and part time out of my garage, and I trust my work and just about nobody else's. I wouold trust a Mom and Pop shop who's life is staked on good work and repeat business.

Anyways, as with most things, it boils down to individuals. If you have had good luck and come out ahead, great! I hope you get to keep getting ahead of insurance. About some time somebody does!!!!

I'm lucky in that since I'm on my 2nd Camaro and have always gone to the same dealer I'm friendly with them, hell the service manager Barry is a member here now (BEAR94Z). He'll attest to them approving everything. The only thing they wouldn't approve is when my tranny had issues getting into gear, they wouldn't allow them to replace it. (They don't have t56 specific tools) so I had to take it to a tranny shop to fix it.

Good for you for finding a reputable service rep, dealer or not. Send him business. They are hard to come by these days!!

Huh? This was for NEW GM parts, not remanufactured. As for the "somebody made money off the insurance company" comment - the warranty rep signed off on ALL costs before the dealer started work; no one ripped anyone off - unless you count me not having to pay one thin dime for the work done.

Brand new Genuine GM parts, the extended warranty coverage still going strong; and since the warranty itself cost my about $1200 (5 years or 100,000 miles)
- technically I got $300 bucks out of this deal overall... What's wrong with that?

Listen, I am no trying to flame you or your insurance company. Genuine GM is best, but I was just saying that I did not buy any warranty, I would use reman'd parts, and would still have come out way ahead. If you do not do most of the work to your car, an extended warranty is not a bad idea. Just not my cup of tea, nor a lot of the enthusiasts who do their own work.

Guess we certainly have different opinions. Great thing about living in America. Sorry if I offended you. I didn't mean to.

they let you split it up into 4 payments if you want, and they are also somewhat negotiable, I paid all at once and got them down from 1375 to 1150. Its worth the money to me, because when I'm at the track I don't have to worry about whether or not I'm going to blow my 10 bolt up, if I do, I'm getting a new one for $0
