Post Extended warranty worth it?

I bought my car used about a year ago, but it had the remainder of the 3/36,000 warranty on it when I bought it. I've got a few months to go before I hit the 3 year mark, but the 36,000 mark is approaching rapidly. What does everyone buy/recommend for the extended warranty, and if you bought one - was it worth it?

Thanks,
Nate

I bought an extended warranty with my 2002 WS6, I havent had to use it yet, it cost about $1090 for a 6 year 50,000 mile warranty. (I dont plan on putting no more then about 3,000 miles on it a year) and living in Minnesota where I cant drive it for about 6 months out of the year that shouldnt be a problem. I figure if I have to use it just ONCE it could come close if not pay completely any warranty work. Obviously if you never have to use it (and you bought an extended warranty) it would be a bad choice. Also even if you dont end up having to use the extended warranty its kind of a peace of mind feeling.Knowing that IF something does go wrong you wont be out a huge amount of cash up front. just my opinion, not saying I'm right because there are definately more options here.

I'd say it depends upon what you're plans for the car entail. Typical dealers look for any reason to not warranty a failed component. If you're going to remain stock, it's not a bad idea. Even if you sell it before then, you might be able to get a pro-rated refund.

I dont have an extended warranty. But one thing i've learned today is that the dealer has to "duplicate" the problem before they'll fix it. I took mine in because i grind second and they couldn't et it to grind so they owldn't work on the synchros.

NEVER buy an extended warranty until you read the small print-even if you do, find a lawyer to interpret the legaleze.
The conditions for exercizing the warranty puts the policy holder at the mercy of the dealer. If the dealer is no good, what good is the warrantyNo one is obligated to fix your car and if they are obligated, how do you feel about "used" parts or "remanufactured parts"-read the small print.
Some extended warranties go so far as to put the owness on the part of the service area. If you bring a car in for a problem and the repair facility replaces parts, they are obligated to send the replaced parts to the insuror. If there is nothing wrong with those parts, the shop does NOT GET PAID. Therefore finding a place to fix the car is a problem OR the service entity KNOWS that they have to get it right and will wait until something really breaks!!
(then you need a tow, or some other real form of inconvenience).
Then there are limitations-abuse (including oil filters, diffferent weight oils, after market parts that they claim interfere with normal operation, etc.
The bottom line is someone is making a lot of money for a false sense of security.
Let the buyer beware!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the responses. I'm still debating, I guess it depends on what the cost is and what the warranty actually says. I know there are different places to buy an extended warranty...where is the best place to go as far as customer service level vs. price?

Thanks again,
Nate

Well, I have just recently taken the plunge ! & bought a 5 year/100K warranty from 1st Warranty.

http://www.1stwarranty.com/contactfwg.htm

I did this "blind" - I did not have any advanced knowledge of them - they sent a card to the house w/ my car's info on it.

I am paying $ 1550.00 ~ for this - 10% down & 12 monthly payments. These guys say that I can take the car to any certified mechanic in the U.S. or Canada , but the repairs do have to be pre-certified by 1st Warranty. And, as mentioned above, there will be times (like a major tranny issue) where teardown approval has to be obtained, and then one of the warranty companies people (claims adjuster ?) will want to take a peek before repairs are OK'd.

Oh, there is a $ 50.00 deductible per visit.

Is it worth it ? Only time will tell - if my rear end were to K.O. tomorrow, in theory my butt is covered.

Since I still owe for another 42 months D'OH ! on a '99 w/ 39,800 on the clock it's seems like fairly cheap insurance. If it turns out to be a gigantic hassle, then I have lost ...

Other than doing like you are here & asking questions of the board memebers, I dunno how you "research" these companies.

So, if you do find anything on the guys I went with, good or bad ! please let me know.

Best of Luck to ya !!

Britt

Thumbs up

Some more food for thought:
I went with the Warranty Gold Diamond plan - 7 year 100,000 miles. I just used it for the first time. No issues what so ever. Two important factors, the first and foremost getting in good with a shop and a mechanic. I am not stock, but a write up of a exhaust manifold leak vs. a header leak does make the difference on a claim. Second is the ability to make the car "as stock" as possible if a rep comes to see it. Alas, I have every OEM part I have taken off the car. My policy ran about $1000 and my first trip in would have been $450. Hell, having the warranty replace crappy-azz speakers every time they blow will pay for you initial cost!

I always buy extended warranties with new car purchases. I used to have a 5.0, that i beat mercilessly. Never once was my driving style questioned, or repairs denied because of mods. I even had out of warranty work (transmission) done, and paid for by Ford.

My '99 Z had the transmission rebuilt under warranty (in Canada), while I had a McLeod single disc, exhaust, lid, LCA, PHR, STB... The only problem the dealership had with it, was they wanted the STB removed before they'd fix it. I won't even get into the major problem I had.

A lot of it is in finding the right dealership. Depending on the problem, an extended warranty can pat for itself the first time you use it, or you could be lucky and have a car that never has a problem. In the long run, the decision is yours.
