gas mileage woes with brand new car
The dealer filled it up when I left the lot which at that time the car had 43miles and now has 156 and has used 3/4 of a tank of gas. I use a real light foot on the gas but just enough to shut the shiftskip light off. My average speed I have been driving has been 45 in stop and go. I started using fifth gear now. I know my mileage will improve with the more miles my car racks up. Have any advice to get better mileage. My 89 5.0 mustang with 142,000+ gets 16+ on the same type driving.

The key here is, The Dealer "filled it up" . The Dealer "filled" my car too. Yep, the needle was on the full mark all right, but it seems that when I "fill it up", the needle actually goes above the full mark. Hence, when I picked up the car from The Dealer, I only got a couple hundred kilometers, and I drove very nice for the first tank before I started getting a little heavy with my right foot, so before you start worrying about a bad gas mileage issue, wait until you "fill" the car, and then see how your mileage is!!
BTW: don't trust your gas gauge either! When it reads 1/4 tank (remaining), don't go too far from a gas station!!! The SOB starts dropping faster and faster after 1/2 tank!! Or, my car is just f'd up!

You just need to break it in. When I first got my car, I would run about 180-200 miles per tank, now after 8 months and 13,000 miles I get anywhere between 230-260 miles per tank.

your car is fine. the gas tank is shaped like a "V" so that every last drop of it gets funneled to the bottom of the "V" where the fuel pickup is. and another reason to make sure youre near a gas station at the 1/4 mark is the dreaded fuel pump burnout. it happens all the time when there isnt enough fuel around the pump to keep it cool and the poor little pump just gets too hot and craps out.</font>

BTW: my car has been getting progressively worse gas mileage since I got it, but I've also been driving it progressively harder since it's been broken in more!! I'm sure if I drove proper, it would be getting better mileage now (with 3500 miles and its first oil change) than when it was first new!?

Gas gauges are not exactly the most accurate of gauges. With each new car I do my own calibration. Know one guy who is empty at 1/8th of a tank. My Z still has 3.8 Gallons in it when it is on the E.

If you run your car a little lower on gas then anticipated don't worry. I've run my car real low on gas many many times and never had the fuel pump go out on me. I used to drive 360 miles between Michigan and Kentucky and sometimes I would forget to stop for gas. I've run it all the way to E many times without failure.
I guess I'm just lucky.
