Well that's the thing for me too. My car has subframes, rollbar, 12 bolt, LCA relocator brackets, LCAs, torque arm, QA1 shocks all around, k-member & a-arms, Transgo shift kit, 3800 stall converter, trans cooler, poly motor and trans mounts, heads, cam, P&P oil pump, electric waterpump, FAST 78 mm intake, Comp Promag rockers, Comp 'r' lifters, ATI Super dampner, long tubes with my own custom 3" x-pipe true duals, line lock, !AIR, !ERG, !PS, !AC, and all of the small boltons
And when asked who did any particular piece I just puff up a little and say I did. Very satisfying to do it all yourself and go to the track and consistantly run well.

I'll give you three reasons.

1). I work two jobs and have a family so my time is VERY limited.

2). No garage to work in. I have a big *** boat in my garage because the town I live in will not allow me to keep my boat in my driveway.

3). I hate working on cars. For years I have replaced my own alternators, brakes, exhaust, starters, serpentine belts, batteries, fuel pumps, radiators, ect. But all the jobs I mentioned have one thing in common. I HATED DOING THEM. I hate getting greasy hands, I hate the one bolt that always gets stripped, I hate the level of frustration that comes when something goes wrong and I hate the mixture of blood and oil on my clothes.

I didn't work at the St. Therese plant in Canada so I can't say I built my car. Since I some how manage to live with the fact that I didn't build the car the first time, I feel it's within my abilities to live with the fact that I didn't rebuild the motor the second time around.

And I was quoted $900 for labor only on a set of heads, cam, timing chain, rods, bolts & LSX intake. For all the labor involved I feel that price is reasonable. Not high nor low but reasonable.

for something as involved as pulling heads, cam, timing chains...etc...

fear of screwing something up and ruining a perfectly good engine. i've started taking on harder and harder "fixes"...but i still left the cam upgrade to someone who has done it.
i've never done ANY internal work on an engine...at the time i didn't even own a torque wrench.

so paying someone experienced to do it was a better choice.

and the fact that i dont have a garage either

That's currently my problem as well and is the main reason I'm moving.

I was quoted $1000 (just physical labor) of head/cam swap by one of the sponsors. That doesn't include shop supplies, the unforseen, etc...
