Help car wont start
I own a 99 SS a4 with a few bolt on mods. Yesterday evening I park the car in my garage and I notice when driving home a light on dash saying "security". There is nothing that I find in the owners manual that talks about this warning. Next morning turn the key and nothing. Battery charged, move it in and out of park and neutral and nothing. Wait a minute try again and it starts. Drive to work, notice security on instrument panel again is lit and then goes off. Get out of work, remote open car and turn ignition. Nothing and nothing after an hour, I get a jump (to no avail) and have to take the train home. My car has always started. A friend suggested cleaning chip on key but that didnt work either. Any suggestions out there? You can save me big bucks with a 30 mile tow if you know answer.

Here's what alldata.com says:
The SECURITY indicator lamp is part of the theft deterrent system. This lamp will come on if one of the following conditions exists:
*The Body Control Module (BCM) is preventing the engine from starting.
*The BCM is not properly programmed.
*The ignition has been turned to the BULB TEST position. The lamp will light for approximately 5 seconds.
There's more info on the BCM - apparently, it monitors several things, and has an awake and sleep mode. Hope this helps.

I had a similar experience not long ago (although with a rather different f-body in sig). Many "experts" - even the stealership - thought the problem was the pass-key system malfunctioning and estimated a 300-400 repair price. After running the codes, it ended up being a bad starter. After replacing that, the car has started well and not acted up ever since. I would suggest checking out the pass-key system, but the starter may also be the culprit - just my $.02. Either way, good luck.

I had something similar happen recently to my '01 SS. I had to push it a 1/4 mile. What I found out "Lucky guess" that it was, that I had installed some underbody neons on my car. For the main power, I spliced it from the main car power, and didn't tighten the bolt down enough. There is a bolt with a red cover right next to all your fuses under your hood. That is the main power for your car. Check that bolt to see if it has come loose. Good luck.

I had the same happen to me the other day. I gave the service dept. a quick call and a mechanic go on the phone. He told me to put the car in neutral and try to start the car. It started right away. Then he said to put it back in park, kill the motor, and start again. It started no problem. He told me that it would not originally start because the car was not fully in Park. Seems pretty silly, but It worked...even though it looked like it was in park to me.
