well, thats actually one of the questions were looking for answers to . what are the advantages and disadvantages to your a-typical cam packages and why. why, in your opinion, is the ls6 z06 whatever package not worth the money/inferior to other cams? assume your talking to an idiot .

I agree it's a difficult task and very time consuming, BUT if you have LOTS of time and follow good LS1 CAM install instructions (they're posted on many LS1 websites) you can do it. I'm just a weekend mechanic, work 50 hours per week, but I was able to do it. Then again, my Camaro is just a toy that I don't need for daily transportation. If yours is a daily driver....forget it. Also, if you're going to swap cams you'll be much happier if you can swap heads too...or at least have your originals professionally ported....makes a BIG difference. To get the most out of your cam swap you'll need to have your computer reprogrammed. I had Ed Wright do mine, as usual, he did an excellent job. So what's the pay off with heads/cam/pcm/hdrs? All I can say is.....WOW man! I couldn't believe the difference. I have so much tire spin through most of my gears that I'll be going through two sets of tires per year....and that's with an automatic. I couldn't be happier

Aftermarket cams offer more power gain I conside the HotCam aftermarket yes...Disadvantages? Well other then loss of gas mileage and other parts that may break I cant think of many disadvantages...Other then smog laws at least here in California...My friend put 370rwhp and 38x ftlbs of tq down with the TH224/112 LSA cam with LT's and an M6 through a 12-bolt...Thats not too bad for an otherwise stock car. He drives it everyday with 4:11s and the cam, manages to get 18mpg etc...Thats just one example I can think of...I just dont think its worth the time to mess around with a Z06 cam of GM cam unless you use the GM HotCam...But yea anyway....

Wait, wait, wait!! Cobraklilla, yer freind has long tubes and a TH224 with a 112 LSA in Cali!?!? I thought the biggest you can really go on a cam in CA is proly around a TR220 with a 114LSA and still pass a sniffer and anythinig bigger than certified shorty headers are illegal and theyll nail you for em? Please tell me if I'm wrong (and I hope that I am) because if so I got to really change some things on my mod list. Also, what about heads? what is the rules with those. Like was said above, assume I am an idiot and know nothing about CA smog laws.

I'll let you know when I get my custom grind Comp cam installed. I think the haardest part is going to be changing the springs and dealing with the retainers and locks!

Other than that it's just time consuming. And I'll need to rent a puller, and valve spring compresser, and buy/rent AC recharger.

Should be fun though.....

His car is new so it doesnt have to be smogged for 5 years since he bought it. Yes he has long tubes and a TH224/112. He has stock heads. Yea basically if you buy your car brand new like he did you have 5 years before you have to smog it. Otherwise if you buy it used its every 2 years just like everyone else. Yes he could get nailed for LTs, no cats, cam, tint, no front plate, etc etc...But thats just a risk he is willing to take.

you can drop the A/C condenser to the ground and the cam will clear (might have to finagle on a lowered car) that way you can forgo the AC recharge
