Hypertech problem.....need help
I have the HPP3 for my 2001 Z28. When I was attempting to install the tuning, an error came back and said "Code 6, If this message appears, Please call Hypertech(then a 1-800 # but I forgot it)", then the programer shut off. It never showed the % of the installation it just went right to the error a couple seconds after pressing Y to install the tuning. I will have to wait until tomorrow to call Hypertech, but I was wondering if anyone has had this problem. I put the programer back in and it started up like there was no Hypertech tuning installed. I also started the car and it runs fine, no SES light. Sorry for the long message. But if anyone has any info, please let me know......thanks

Did you say that you tried to program it again? Did it work?
I would try to program the car again. Plug the HPP into the dash and fire it up. It will go through the self-test and tell you if the car has been programmed. If it has not been programmed, then go through the programming process and see if it works.
If it has been programmed, set it back to stock, then program it again.
I don't remember what "Code 6" is, but I think I had that once, and if that was my code, it was no biggie. I programmed it again and everything worked. When I called Hypertech, they said not to worry about it.
I don't know their 1-800 number, but their local number is 901-382-8888 ... call and ask for Sean White. He'll take care of you. Tell him Roger Cotton told you to call.
One word of advice ... ALWAYS make sure you have a good charge on the battery and that you are not connected to a battery charger when you are programming. Otherwise, you risk frying the PCM, and that ain't cheap to replace.

I called Hypertech this morning and they said not to worry about it and that nothing had been installed. Then I installed the tuning before going to work. The car seems to be running good, no SES light or pinging. Now I just need to see if it helps me out any at the track.
If I ever have to call Hypertech again, I'll be sure to ask for Sean.
Thanks

Try this setup and see what you think:
Power Tuning - Installed
Rev Limiter - 6400
Shift Firmness - 50%
Shift points:
1-2 +2
2-3 +2
3-4 +3
Set your fan temp based on your thermostat. Set any other options you may have as well (tires, aftermarket gear, etc ... )
Let me know ... those settings were great for my 2001 Z28 A4

I just bought a new Z28 A4. I am considering doing a few mods...probably just intake and exhaust. I was just curious if you think it's worth doing a mod with a hypertech....isit a big difference / worth the price?
Thanks

rncotton - After I installed the HPP3 tuning, I noticed a slight pinging at WOT. So I called Hypertech and he asked if I had put a new thermostat (180 or 160). I told him I have not put it in yet, I bought the 160*. He said that is why its pinging and when I put the 160* in, it should go away.
How much of a difference did you feel changing the shift firmness? Did your Z28 have 3.23? Also, how much did the HPP3 help you at the track?

Let me try to answer the questions in the last two posts.
First, the pinging at WOT very well can be caused by the stock thermostat. Another culprit is the MAF. If you are using a ported/descreened or larger MAF, then there is a very good chance that you will ping with the power tuning installed. If you have a modified MAF, go back to OEM and see if that helps.
Either way, however, the 160* thermostat will help. Just make sure to set the fans to come on earlier (the Hypertech programmer will do this for you when you enter a 160* PowerStat)
My car was a 2001 Z28, A4 with 2.73 rear. Unfortunately, I never got it to the track before I totalled it. Last year it was being tuned all summer and I didn't want to risk screwing up anything at the track. I was planning to go to the track a few times this year to finish dialing it in .. but alas, the car is a salvage now.
But, I do have some dyno test results that may shed some light on what the HPP can do for you.
My car laid down 284 RWHP when it was stock. The HPP alone raised that number to 298 RWHP. 14 RWHP gain ain't too shabby. This is HP actually going to the wheels, not some inflated HP number claim at the flywheel.
Is it worth it for the programmer? If you have a M6, I would say probably not. But, if you have the A4, OH WOW !!! The car drives totally different. You get a quicker response off the line and the motor really seems to come alive.
I hope I answered your questions. If not, shoot me an e-mail or post in here.

I still have the stock MAF so its most likely the thermostat. I'll be putting the 160* in it as soon as possible.
That is an awsome gain from the HPP3. Hopefully I could see a gain like that on my car.
Here are my latest Dyno # with my current mods...
317 RWHP
337 RWTQ
Did you gain anymore TQ from the HPP3?
Thanks for you help on this.....

Anyway, according to the dyno, here's the numbers:
Stock:
284 RWHP
328 ft/lbs TQ
Hyptertech Tuning:
298 RWHP
392 ft/lbs TQ
I don't see how a programmer could give a 64 ft/lb increase in torque.

Thanks rncotton, you answered what I was about to post. The HPP III power tuning made my car start pinging at about 1/2 throttle. I wanted to get the thermostat anyway, and the speedo fix and shift firmness are really what I wanted it for.
