i put 1/4 quart of oil more than required, is that ok?

changed my oil today, and got the bigger oil filter (Mobil M1-206) which holds 1/4 quart oil more. filled it up, and placed it, then put the remainder of that quart (which was about half) and 5 more quarts into the engine. 6 quarts total, when it should have been 5.75 (stock is 5.5 + 1/4 with the bigger oil filter). dipstick showed it had more oil than operating range. no smoke came out or anything, car seems fine. but oil pressure does look just a little higher than it was before.

should i drain the remainder? will i have any problems if i drove it hard?

thanks

this reminds me of a funny story (you're all right by the way). Friend of mine's dad used to work at a repair place, and they had this guy complaining of an oil leak. They replaced the lining around the pan, tightened the pipes, replaced a few other parts, anywhere there was seepage. Seemed to be working just fine so they gave it back to the guy.

Then he came in the next week complaining of the same leak problem, they looked at it, couldn't find anything wrong with it, maybe replaced the filter or some minor part. Well this went on for a couple months, and finally they asked him how much oil he put in his car.

He was putting in about 4 or more quarts more than operating level, and the engine was just dumping all the excess. So they told him to not change his oil again, and just take the car in every month and they'd change it for him.

Long story short, if that car survived, yours will too.

your fine.. 1/4 qt wont hurt you. I used to work at a quick lube place when I was in high school and a guy came in with his car somking like crazy wondering what was wrong. The guy had filled the oil to the brim of the oil cap. Somewhere in the range of 14 qt's this guy put in. It was a nissan 4cyl that was supposed to have 3 1/2-4 qt's. I'm pretty sure that guy caused some problems with that mistake.

Actually, I always run 6qts.. RSI (performance shop here in Houston) recommends it for enthusiastic drivers..

I've heard one myself......This girl was in tech school. Went up to the instructor and asked..."I just changed my oil and now it won't start?"

Short story short, she filled it up, alright....Ford Escort....16 qts of oil right up flush to the top of the valve cover.....

That one lived too......

i think an old rule of thumb is to go beat on the car, make a few WOT passes, etc ... then come back and check the dipstick. if you see a bunch of tiny bubbles then you've over filled it and its foaming.

may not be true, but thats what i've heard anyways
