Illegal Exh??

This might sound stupid, but I thought it was a little too techy for the lounge..

What makes headers so illegal?? Even if you still have cats and the O2's are in good working order..

What are some tips to passing inspection... I don't have an anual inspection in CT every year, just emmissions every two or so years.. Pluss I'm moving to NM next month so I want to be prepared for anything..

Thanx yall..

Re: Illegal Exh??

The technical reason that most headers (the good ones ) are illegal is because they move the cats back. Moving the cats back generally decreases there effciency even if the car still passes smog.

I have mids with cats that passed the sniffer. I think the key is finding a shop that isn't too **** about the visual and then getting cats so you can pass the sniffer.

A few more points to his statement:
Headers that don't have all provisions for emissions equipment are illegal. So if the stock manifolds have EGR hook ups, they need to be retained.

It is also illegal to change the NUMBER of catalytic converters. So that too makes LTs illegal for single cat cars. So if you go from one to two, you're breaking the law <~ It doesn't make sense to me, but thats the law, I guess...

Re: Illegal Exh??

ANYTHING having to do with changing the number, position, size, kind, placement of the catalytic converters is technically illegal...

typically if you HAVE cats (hi flow - pass visual) that work (pass sniffer) you will be ok.

no guarentees tho

just register your car in a state without emissions

Re: Illegal Exh??

What also seems to be the issue is that even if visible parts have no effect whatsoever on emissions, the companies that make them choose not to get them approved (thru CARB, etc.). If they can sell enough without a CARB EO# , they have no reason to spend the considerable amount of time and money it takes to get one. So even if a part isn't officially "emissions legal", that doesn't mean that it hurts emissions.
