Install University "Rear Hatch Release: Fix #2" REALLY WORKS!!!
Well, yesterday I finally took 5 minutes and fixed my rear hatch so it will always open on the FIRST attempt ('cause I hate having to stand by the hatch while pushing the button to open it, or even worse, having the keys in the ignition, pushing the trunk release button, walking to the back, and the hatch is still locked! I've literally run through that whole process 3 and 4 times to get the hatch open!? ).
I used the advice off this page, except I did not perform steps 1 - 4.................instead, I just pulled the carpet up and over the lock mechanism to expose the spring you need to get at, seen here. Then, I used a spring I found in the garage (looks like it came off the end of a chain used on a screen door?? ) and attached it to the factory spring like this. Then all you have to do is pull the carpet back over the lock mechanism, tuck it under the lip, and you're done (it only took me about 4 minutes total to open the hatch, expose the spring, find a spring, install it, and close everything back up).
Anybody who has this issue should really do this "mod"................it works perfect. I am so happy now!!!

Hmmmm, wonder what I did wrong then. I too was agravated by the hatch getting hung up all the time so I followed the instructions to the letter. To the point I even went to Lowe's and bought the spring they recommended. Put it on and it looks just like they show on their site but it still hangs up about 50% of the time. Usually have to actuate the release twice before it comes open. I thought maybe the hatch was not sitting right on the car or maybe the carpet was getting in the way but the gap is even the whole way around and the best I can tell the carpet is not getting in the way. Guess this time I am the exception to the rule!!
