Installing autometer gauges in TA LS1- A/C vents..

I have not been able to find any sites showing the dash installs for 2 1/16" gauges on LS1 body Trans Am cars (In the A/C vents) . I have a pic of one , but not the install stuff. I did a search on the net and just found pics.. I never took the dash apart on this car ( have multiple times on the LT1 ) it seems like a total different setup. Just looks like it will be more of a paint to take it off then what worth to you know..

Anyone have any tips? I haven't even looked at it yet, I might go check it out in a few mins. I'm new to the LS1 setup.

Thanks in advance..
Paul

The gauge size to fit the vents is 2 5/8 , not 2 1/16. I've installed gauges in my drivers side vent and the 3 middle ones. Use two small picks to reach in and bend the tabs inward so you can easily slide the vents out. Run the heater through them for a few minutes to soften them up so they don't break. In the middle 3 vents there is a flat behind the RS vent that works well to drill a hole in to run all the wires out of it. Not much to it really. Good luck

Definitely get the larger gauges if you can. I have the smaller gauges (left over from when I used to have them in the a-pillar), and I had to turn the vents into mounts for the gauges. It works, but isn't nearly as clean looking as the larger size. That write-up provided above is nice...

Here's a link to a pic of mine:

good luck,

Well as you can see this is my first post on this board. I just wanted to say That I have a 2 1/16 n2o psi gauge in my drivers side center vent. I used a piece of foam and cut it a little bigger than the size of the vent hole then cut it out for the gauge. I have it stuffed inside the vent with the cover on it and nobody can see it unless I open that vent. I have the light (red) come on with the heater sw.

Oh btw I havent set up a sig yet but I have a 01 ws6 Hope you guys dont mind.

Thanks so much for the tips guys, I have not even really looked into the install yet on the car, I just wanted to put my left over ( never used) phantom air/fuel gauge in the car, and wanted to do it in the center vent of the car so it's a little different looking. I might now do it on the Driverside one, since It would be easier. Just have to find the wire on the PCM to tap into which I'm sure I can find out. I will just have to fit it in somehow to work, I'm not gonna buy another gauge to fit in the 9/16" difference. I don't even know if they sell a 2 5/8" a/f gauge. Have to look into it.

Thanks alot for the help it did indeed help me a lot! I will more then likely do it this weekend.

Shane, That is a beautiful car you have, I wish we could have gotten our LS1 in SOM, THe dealer told us they could not get it.. Now more then ever I wish we would have 'shopped' around and not snapped at the idea of a pewter WS6 so fast. Oh well live and learn.

Thanks Paul!
Pewter is a nice color too! When we went shopping for an '02, we were looking for a pewter non-ram air so I could move over the Mecham hood from the old car & minimize painting costs. At that time (near the end of production), all of the dealers close to me claimed they were getting all ram-air cars, and could not get a non-ram air in pewter. I'm thinking they were BSing me, but it gave me the opportunity to try and find a new color (SOM), and get a little more $$ for the old car with the custom hood on it.

Anyway, good luck with your install!

Shane

That is a NICE setup... I wish the Camaro had something like that I could just plug a meter into. It gives it a really clean look, like it belongs there. Only way to add guages to my Z is to get an A-pillar pod... not so nice-looking.
