Considering buying an LS1, I used to have an LT1, and I loved it. Anything I should look out for when looking at LS1's? Any years better than others? This will be a T/A btw.

 

I have heard a lot of people say that '00 and up have a little more power.

 

'00 and up have the LS6 intake manifold. That's about it for noticeable differences that I'm aware of.

 

Its only a rumor that the 00+ have the LS6 intake... its not true, we still have the LS1

 

The '01-'02 have the LS6 intake. The '00 still has the LS1 intake.

 

Umm, it's not a rumor, it's a fact. Just because we have the LS6 intake doesn't mean we HAVE an LS6, we still have an LS1... just better intake.

01-02 have the 01 and up intake, which happens to be the same intake used on the LS6 motors.

the 01-02 motors have a smaller cam... so if you are planning on changing the cam anyways a 01-02 would be cool. if your goin to leave it stock then get a 98-00 motor and justt buy an 01+ intake.

 

why would they want to put a smaller cam on the 01-02 camaro's w/ the ls6 intake? i dont see the point in that... you'd have a slightly stronger camaro w/ a 98-00 cam and an ls6 intake.. why not just keep the cam on the 98-00 and put them on the 01-02's?

The EGR valve was also eleminated in the '01-'02, had to do with the cam change. A plus IMO. Later>>>>>>

 

I'm sorry about continuing to beat this horse but it drives me crazy not knowing what GM's mindset is here.

Why put in a smaller cam? Maybe a fuel economy issue? But then you lose horsepower so you throw a better intake on it to get back some HP. So you use the LS6 intake and at the same time you get to dump the EGR.

Or was the goal to eliminate the EGR and then everything else fell into place as a result. I can't believe they made these changes just to bump the LS1 to 310. The extra 5hp must have been just a by-product?

I'll bet one of you smart guys out there knows (or can find) the answer.

 

Well, it's MY understanding that the cam in the '01 and '02s is the cam from the Chevy 6.0L trucks. Though "smaller", it produces much more bottom end torque than the standard LS1 cam. The earlier LS1's had a problem with bottom end torque (as opposed to its predecessor the LT1).

 

Thanks, I do remember reading that somewhere. If it is true, it's nice to hear that GM was still trying to fix any Camaro performance problems that close it's demise.

 

There are a few more differences on the motors from 98-00 and the 01-02. The 01-02's also got the LS6 block, and a different head casting. Plus the tune was a little more dead on also, and larger injectors were also added.

 

Over the past few years I have had a 96 z28, a 98 z28 , a 00 z28, and a 00z28 and a 02 z28 in the garage. All are gone now except the 02, but I can definitely tell that the 02 is the fastest of them all, and the track proves it. Plus this car isnt broken in yet at 14 k, where as 30k is the peak for these motors. But all in all, Id say 98-02 are close in performance.
