Why put in a smaller cam? Maybe a fuel economy issue? But then you lose horsepower so you throw a better intake on it to get back some HP. So you use the LS6 intake and at the same time you get to dump the EGR.

Or was the goal to eliminate the EGR and then everything else fell into place as a result. I can't believe they made these changes just to bump the LS1 to 310. The extra 5hp must have been just a by-product?

I'll bet one of you smart guys out there knows (or can find) the answer.
I'm assuming that they just didn't want the F-body's to whoop up on the Vette from the factory, so that's probably why they put in a smaller cam with the LS6 intake, to kind of offset each other. Not sure, but it's just my opinion.

EGR can easily be eliminated on any car in about 10seconds and some sheet metal.

How about that lean condition that seemed to be more present in the later LS1s than in '98-'00??? Everytime someone lifted airflow restrictions....they jumped right on the site with SES codes???? Yeah, there were/are several differences between the two versions...personally I think I'd have changed to the '01-'02 version if I wasn't stickin where I am. There's no "better" between the two if you're gonna bump the perf. from what I've observed the last coupla' years. But it would seem there's more fun workin' on the later version without some of the extra plumbing!!! 2 cents

Talking

1998s have larger 28/lb injectors vs. 99-2000s 26/lbs. I'm not sure on the injectors for 2001-2, but I think that they returned to a slightly larger size. 2000+ got cast exhaust manifolds replacing the tubular ones. 2001+ got the LS6 intake and 5.3 truck cam. This eliminated the need for an EGR system. 1998s have individually mounted coil packs vs. the rail set-up on later models. 1998s also have a heavier metal gas tank vs. the newer plastic ones. If I had to do it over again, I would have waited until 2001, but I've upgraded most of the stuff on my 2000 Z28 anyway. Good luck!

I have driven most of the configerations in 3rd and 4th gens in stock form. The performance difference from '98 to '02 could be production verance(sp). A strong '98 will beat a slow '02. The SS is cool but not $4000 to $5000 faster. Yes, I still want one.

Had a '94 M6 stock except for CAI, fast as hell. (Sold to friend has 120K still fast as hell) LS1's with autos slow or no better than a LT1. M6 LS1's are fun

Get something in good shape in stead of a year. Save a few $$$$ for fun parts and enjoy.

To take this post another direction... regarding the 6 speeds. I have heard a lot of discussion about T56 problems on LS1's, are there certain years that were worse than others? I can't remember exactly what the problem was, something about popping out of gear, or not going into gear, or something along those lines.

An A4 LS1 with intake, good torque converter and headers = high 11's. An M6 can't get there with intake and headers.

There was no change from 01-02 on the engine, the injector size is the same.

judge for yourself, my car is a very very very well taken care of 98 with only 29k miles (bought it with 26). I had to get a new clutch due to the fact that when i raced i couldn't get it into 5th, 3rd didn't exist, and there were times when reverse had to fight a war to get it to fall in. Everyone said tranny was at fault, dropped a new clutch in during the holidays, haven't had a problem since. Till the next 29k miles i suppose.

Cool

My T56 has been nothing but smiles so far. The addition of a Pro 5.0 shifter was a given.
