Some 2002 LS1 cars were built using LS6 blocks. I haven't had a chance to see if I lucked out yet.

Switching out one for the other will not get you more or less power -- maybe that's what you read. The castings are slightly different, though.

Well, I can pretty much guarantee you that Scott didn't say that the LS1 and LS6 blocks were identical, because they're not. There are pics on ls1tech.com -- I linked to them a couple posts back.

No he said all 01-02 f-bodies have the same block
There's the old "Mine has an LS6 block" legend........well....in 2001 and 2002, they all have the same block. THe difference is that the 'bright silver' blocks were cast at Ste. Catharines, ONT and the darker blocks were cast in Mexico.

Since the casting number itself is part of the cast, there is no way that an LS1 casting would get an LS6 part number on it.

Agreed, there were SOME LS1s in '02 (and I thought a few in '01 as well? ) that came with the TRUE "LS6" block. Very small number, but not a "myth" or "legend".
As far as the question about putting LS7 heads onto an LS1, I don't think it's physically possible because of the size of the valves, and the fact that they would contact the top of the cylinder bore (which is 4.125" compared to only 3.89" of the LS1). However, a re-sleeved LS1 block should be able to accept them .
