Ok guys. I'm now in search of my next vehicle. I was laid off from my job and totalled my car a few months before. I'm going to be receiving my pension soon around 5k. I am debating on an ls1 camaro or firebird(I've found a couple). or an lt1(easier to find at the price). I just want to know which has the better aftermarket now. I am planning to keep this car for some time. I'm leaning towads the ls1's but I'm only wanting to get around 400 hp after all the mods are done. I know the ls1's are lighter and have 40 more horsepower

 

If I were in the market for a car I would go LS1 over the lt1 because I have had many problems with the optispark distributor in my lt1 with my cam.

 

another thing I'm thinking is I can find a ower mileage lt1 for cheaper and I can use the money I save on aftermarket parts.

it is more than you want to spend though.

 

The LS1 based Gen 4 Camaro/Firebird has better brakes, better aftermarket support for the engine and is more economical to boot!

If you can find an LS1 that is decent go that route. I *almost* bought a '98 ls1 camaro before I looked at a '96 with much less miles. Although the '98 felt much faster I decided on the '96 because of milage and body was in better shape. It might be pretty hard to find a ls1 in good shape for that price. Not impossible though. If youre not in any rush just wait till one comes to the market. Fall is almost here and prices will be falling.

A stock LS1 will walk most LT1s ---even after they've had hundreds of dollars invested in them. Take the new layout, there's a reason the LS is the GM motor today. Then again, LS upgrades are more costly, overall. Unfortunately, you have to get that catfish ugly front end.

 

LS1's actually had closer to 50rwhp more then the LT1's if you look at the later year LS1's...After they started getting LS6 parts... +1 with the LS1...

Stock for stock they are about 1 second faster in the 1/4 mile...and if you want 400hp...well, you can get that with full boltons and a tune.

 

I prefer the front end of the 98-02. The earlier 4th gens looked like a squashed version of the 3rd gen front end. (Besides, the interior of the pre 98 4th gens just really sucked.)

If I was going to do it again and I could get the LS1 for within $2000 more, I'd buy the LS1. Not that the LT1 is bad. The LS1 is just better and newer. Milage isn't a big concern on these motors. So long as they are well maintained.

 

ive had both with bolt ons with spray,i drive a ls1 sold the lt1.the ls1 with bolt ons feels really close to my full bolt on lt1 with a 125 shot, then ive always got the 100 shot on the ls1 just in case

oh and get a m6 there alot more fun.

 

pre-97 just so ya know. and the pre-97 interior isnt so bad its grown on me. although yes i did like my 97 interior better
