ls1.. potential serious problem discovered

for the first time ever, the past two times i've checked my oil level over about a total of 3k miles (1 1k mile trip included) my car is using/losing oil... so far the loss has been a total of a quart or even less... however its still definatly losing some somewhere which is enough to scare me.. car only has 45k miles on it

then i noticed residue in my exhaust tip... only on ONE side and its been there ever since even after cleaning it out... it comes back... its a very dry residue though its still oily. i assume its motor oil but its hard to tell for sure because after mixxing with the exhaust carbon coating in the pipes its gonna be black regardless

i have no idea what to assume or what to do... what could cause raw oil to be entering my exhaust but only come out on the passenger side exhaust tip (i do not have true duals)

also forgot to mention.. i do not have cats and the car shows no visual or smell related signs of burning oil

umm help?

Where the hell have you been?

LS1's all use oil, some more than others. 1qt in 3K miles is on the high side but nothing to worry about. My SS did that, my C5 does it too sometimes. I'm over it

The side the residue is on does not really matter since you do not have true duals.

A quart is normal on the 01s.
Less than a quart isn't a big deal.

You have a Y-pipe, so figuring out what side of the engine is doing what is impossible.

I'd start with that and if that doesn't fix it, you might look into replacing the valve seals. You'll need a spring kit for that. My '01 had a dirty tailpipe and chugged a little oil. Come to find out, the valve seal was missing under one of my springs. I found it in the oil pan.

Isn't that more of a WOT oil usage issue?? Or do they just burn that much more at WOT? The LS6 PCV upgrade takes the fumes from the valley cover instead of the valve covers. Mine burns oil too, I really need to change it, it's been over 4k miles.

And yeah, WTH have you been?? I take it the Army EOD has something to do w/ it.

change the PCV... dont worry about missing oil unless you are missing more than a quart... or change your plugs and find a thick coating of wet oil on one of your plugs

No, you need to remove the intake, remove the knock sensors, remove the valley cover, cut a chunk of the engine block off, replace valley cover with LS6 cover, reinstall knock sensors, put intake back together, remove old pcv plumbing, block off holes in valvecovers or just put the new style ones on (thats what I did I didn't want to mess with rubber plugs) then you can use an LS6 pcv system. So, yeah, after all that it's a direct fit.

I would pull the throttle body and check if you have oil in the intake. don't assume anything, do some good thorough checking first.
