Free mods aren't bad if you do them right. Check out these sites and you can get more info.

Welcome aboard!
First I would definately get a lid and exhaust catback.
TSP makes excellent aftermarket lids and will run you $100-$130.
Loudmouth, Dynomouth, Magnaflow, hooker & GMMG are all top notch catbacks. They range from $150 to $700 depending on which sound and price range you like best.
Now with just those and the free mods you can expect low 13 second passes with a good launch, decent air and decent track elevation. Maybe even high 12's but more likely low 13's.
If you want to keep modding then you definately should get a Torque converter with trans cooler and shift kit. TCI SSF3500 is a great bang for the buck converter. That verter with the shift kit, trans cooler and installation will run you $1,100 and drop your times down to 12.5-12.7ish if you can get traction (you may need drag radials). This will also kill those dead spots (so punching it at 35 will feel as good as it does as 25).
After that I'd look at LT headers, underdrive pulley, throttle body, gears and CAI. If you wanna get real serious then go for heads, cam and or N20.
Good Luck and grats on your LS1!
