LS1 Spec 3 clutch more reliable than the LT1 version?
i know this is kindda driveline, but it deals with the LS1 specifically.
i've read lots of posts about the sprung center section of the Spec 3 clutch not holding up over time.
when i mentioned this to my mechanic (very familiar with LT1/LS1) he said that it was the LT1 version that was so bad, and that he's installed 30+ Spec 3's on LS1s without incidence.
soooo...
i need a clutch to hold good power, ~400hp at the wheels now and hopefully +50hp next year.
thought of the Spec 4, but am worried cause it's a daily driver, but not really any rush hour traffic kind of driving.
AND NO I CAN'T AFFORD A STREET TWIN!

Yes the LT1 version is weaker than the LS1 setup due to the fact that the LT1 PP springs are inverted. Instead of the TB pushng on the PP the LT1 set has the TB pulling on the PP.

I talked to a lot of LS1 guys at the Auto Fair this past weekend as well as people in my F-body Club that have a Spec 3 and they're all happy with their setups. Not one of them had a bad thing to say and several of them were over the 400rwhp mark, one guy was putting down 448rwhp with the Stage 3.

Another excellent option would be the Ram Powergrip. It is Ram's stage 3 comparable clutch, and it features an organic/metallic disc. Generally speaking, they are rated to 500 HP from Ram, but it does depend on usage (i.e. launches, weight of car, tires being run, etc.). We have the Ram Powergrips in stock and ready to ship for $369! They are an excellent clutch. We ran Ram's Powergrip HD (stage 4 comparable) in our '99 Corvette with a ProCharger D1SC that put 630 RWHP down on 12.5 psi of boost. It took every bit of our abuse and is now enjoying a new owner. FYI, the Powergrip HD is a full metallic disc, so it will have some chatter associated with it with low RPM releases. If you rev it up a little higher before letting out on the pedal it has a smooth release.
