LS2 Swap

Im going to be throwing in a new engine into my 97Z. The LS2 looks like a nice upgrade. What would it involve to drop it into my 97?? I know the trans won't bolt up. Is there any way to make that work or will i need a new trans too???

Re: LS2 Swap

i think you should stick with a big cube LT1 engine. much less hassle and similar hp potential.

talk to the guys at VRE

What are we talking about reliability wise??? I really don’t want to spent 8K on something that will only last 40k miles . The reason i wanted to go with an ls2 is because I would basically have a new car. Its only a weekend car but i still hate working on it all the time when im just trying to keep it on the road.

I see 1,2,3 gens getting LS1s all the time I really dont understand why everyone is so agains puting an LS1 or 2 into an LT1 car.

Re: LS2 Swap

i see what you mean about reliability..but how do you know what the longevity is of the motors that have only been on the market for a year?

a well built motor from a reputable company like VRE with a mild or slightly above mild setup will last a good number of miles.

it's when you take that motor and put an extreme valvetrain in it and you get lower life out of the motor.

I would rather have the LS2.. I doubt its a motor that will tank after 50K..

Re: LS2 Swap

While im sure that a well built engine that doesn't make crazy numbers might last awhile it really don't think it will last as long as a stock new motor. For me to get an LT1 with 400hp its going to have to have heads and a cam. Or i could get a totally stock LS2.

A LS2 will run you $6,375.00 or so, depending on what dealer you get it from. You're still going to need to purchase the exhaust, computer, alternator, starter, belts, brackets, and k member. I'm not sure if your stock fuel system will work... but it might.

Youre basically looking at atleast $9000 to assemble all of the parts if you get them new... and thats if you do all of the labor youself. People tend to be against this cause you can get a LS1 car, do bolt-ons and a tune and have a 400hp Camaro for around the same cost.

A company like Golen will sell you a 383 long block with a warranty for much cheaper. The 400hp version sells for $5000.

All you will need then is to upgrade your fuel injectors and a pcm reflash.

You'll just have to look at your funds and how much youre willing to spend.

But how long will the engine last??? Like i said before i like working on my car but don't like it sitting on jack stands every 6 months If a 383 LT1 will last a good long time that thats what im probably going with. But i dont want to spend 6K on an engine to have it blow up in 10K
