MAF screen removal

MAF screen removal
Hi all
Is it safe to run with the MAF screen removed? I've got the SLP lid with K&N filter, SLP 85mm MAF and smooth bellows. Just wondering is it safe to remove the MAF screen and will it make any difference to the performance or is the path to trouble?
Going to be adding the SLP Loudmouth with center-mount quad-tips later this year. Will that make any difference?
Thanks for your opinions/observations.
Gary
2001 SS, Black, M6, T-tops, Hurst, Leather, 12 CD, SLP Lid, K&N, SLP MAF, SLP smooth bellows, SLP CAGS eliminator.
This car is a real fun run in the UK.

I read about doing this on LS1.com, and some said after 200 miles, they were having prblem with the cars running right, didn't say why. But the screen directs the air into the MAF which is good I would guess? Slp sells an aftermarket MAF and they leave the screen in theirs, go figure? Hopefully some one will post more info for the both of us!!

On LS1.com we are talking about MAF ends. Or the porting of the MAF, even Granatelli's MAFs. All of them seem to be good for some cars and bad for others. In both my 99 SS and this 02 Z the MAF ends from Whisper leaned the car out too much and caused detonation. I was getting 2-4 degrees of knock retard on AutoTap. Since I put the stock screened MAF back in the car is running fine. GM performance parts sells the MAF for the LS6 Z06 Vette that comes descreened. And as you know SLP sells the 85mm MAF that origionally was a GM part used on the 6.0L and larger GM truck motors. Unless you have Ls1.edit and can program the pcm the MAF ends in my opinion should be avoided.

I know that on the LT1's, that taking out the screen only screws up the MAF readings. The screen is in there to help smooth out the air flow across the MAF to get a good air flow reading. Hacking the screen just messes everything up. The GM ones without a screen are apparently calibrated for this. BTW, the Grantelli ones don't do anything either.

Ok... on LS1's the PCM will recalibrate the new MAF and or ends back to stock programing, thus being a waste of $300. I have removed the screens out of my 3rd gen and my T/A i have current and yes all that happens is a little better throttle response. the screen doesnt "direct" the air to the sensor. just be very careful when u cut it out do not touch the sensor in the middle.

Well I bought whisper maf ends for my car and they seemed to work perfectly. I autotapped my car about a month after I got them in, and I was running a little rich even with them. I am guessing I was running very rich then without them. Stock I ran a 13.4 @ 104 and with a lid, underdrive pulley and ported maf ends I ran a 12.98 @ 108. I don't think I could have gained 4 tenths and 4 mph with just the lid and pulley, I do belive the ends helped at least a little bit. I have heard claims of 7rwhp and if your car is running rich to begin with, I wouldn't doubt it.

Thanks
Thanks for all the replies.
I guess it's time to give it a try. The SLP MAF appears to have a removable screen - tightly fitted, but removable. I guess if I'm careful I'd be able to refit it.
I'll let you know if there is any noticeable difference. Maybe only WOT, so I'll find some open road (not easy in the UK) and blast it.
Cheers

OK, I know that there is a huge debate over descreening the MAF or leaving it in place. Personally, I have my screen in place.
The major argument for removing the screen is that the Z06 was descreened at the factory because of the short stright flow that the air will take between the filter and the TB. There is no need to "straighten" this airflow since it is not running through a couple of bends in the intake. This is true, however, the computer was recalibrated to take this into account.
So ... for now ... I'm sticking with my screened MAF.
All C5 MAFs (except the 02 Z06) have screens in them to help in laminar airflow. The 02 LS6 MAF does not. GM realized that with the need for more air in the 02 Z06, they would actually take a harder look at the screen in the C5.
John Juriga (Chief Powertrain Engineer for GM) stated they use the same MAF as the truck, but that the trucks have more bends and turns in the intake tract thus requiring a screen to smooth the airflow over the MAF elements. From that research they discovered the screen was not really needed on the C5 since it has a relatively short tract to the MAF housing.
They programmed the PCM in the LS6 to accommodate this change.
