I believe you need new compression rings. Chronic LS1 problem causing high oil consumption. I don't think it's only on 2000 LS1s. If I'm misinformed, please let me know.

Cool

In order for you to get the rings replaced, your local dealership will have to do an oil consumption test. They will check the oil level once a week, and basically it will have to be using OVER 1 qt. in 2,000 miles to even be considered for the ring swap. The problem with the rings is fluttering under light load, higher RPM driving (around 4,000 RPM or so). The rings would flutter and allow oil to get by. It's primarily been a problem with the M6 cars, for obvious reasons. The other thing to consider would be the PCV valve. Check the back of your throttle body blade; if it's covered in oil, then you need a new valve. I would recommend that you start checking your oil level once a week to see what the average consumption is. If the oil level gets too low, then you risk spinning a bearing.

Yup, they all burn oil. I was a quart and a half low the other day after 6000 miles with valvoline synthetic 10w-30 after 20,000 miles. Didn't check it b/c i figured they would have fixed the problem for the 02's. The funny thing is that when it's low i loose the whole piston slap thing and it drives better. But i still try and keep it full.

Here's highlights from the Tech Service Bulletin No.: 01-06-01-023:

Date: October, 2001

Subject: Higher Than Expected Oil Consumption (Replace Rings)

Models:
1999-2001 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette
1999-2001 Pontiac Firebird
with 5.7L Engine (VINs G, S - RPOs LS1, LS6)

Condition-

Some owners may comment on higher than expected oil consumption. When checked, the oil consumption could be in the range of 400-600 miles per quart (700-1000 km/L).

Cause-

The cause for this condition may be an interaction between the piston rings and the cylinder bore in vehicles that are operated at higher RPMs - typically manual transmission vehicles driven in a manner where the engine is frequently or consistently operating at greater than 3200 RPM.

Correction-

A new set of piston rings is currently available through GMSPO. The new rings are part of a complete piston ring kit. Install only the number 2 compression ring and the oil expander ring from the piston ring kit. All other rings in the piston ring kit should be discarded. The original number 1 compression ring and the oil ring rails should be re-used in their original positions on the piston. All pistons should be used in the same cylinder bore.

Changing only the piston rings noted, with no change in driving style, should change oil consumption to an acceptable level. Changes in driving style that reduce the amount of time spent at higher RPMs will also positively effect oil consumption.

Sounds expensive if you're not still under warranty!

Thumbs up

Sure - www.alldata.com is an excellent resource. Besides listing TSBs, they also have recall info, and excerpts from the GM service manual with diagrams, part number pricing and labor times, diagnostic trouble codes, etc. Excellent resource. It costs $25 for the first year, and $15 to renew.
