My LS1(traction control on) vs my twins LT1
Traction control!!! Is this slowing me down on take off? I raced my twin who has a stock LT1 with flowmasters and I have a 98 ls1 with modified MaFH. To see what I did go to www.installuniversity.com and look for the mods section. Anyway we did four runs and I only beat him on the first one. I think thats because I hesitated on flooring all the way to avoid spinning too much. The other 3 runs I was like let me just push a little harder and that caused the low traction control light to come on and next thing I see my twin is a car length ahead of me. I know I may need more practice on take off cuz I only had the car 3 weeks, but whats up with that low traction light. Did my tires work on where to send power while I was eating my brothers dirt? I aint feeling that so if there is a way to turn it off let me know. My twin was spinning like hell on his tires so it can't be that he has better traction. We both have good tread on our stock tires. I was going to get 18x9.5, but after today I realized I need to get 17x11s to kill him, but for now I need that dam low traction thing off. On the new cadillac sevilles you can turn it off with the touch of a button. I wish they did this for the ls1s. Anyway tell me what I gotta to beat my brother. Once I got moving he didn't leave me. I know if we raced a little longer I would have passed him going into 4th gear.

Oh my twins lt1 has new spark plugs. I forgot what they are called, but he says they are better than platinum and he paid 55 bucks for them. Would have been a real factor in our runs? I haven't changed my spark plugs yet, but will next week. When I run again I will let yall know if that helped. I still need to know about the traction control.

If you have traction control, then you have a button above the radio. One for fog lights, if you have that and one to disable the Traction Control. While car is running punch it and you should see a light on the dash saying ASR Off. Now you will be able to spin the s*** out of your tires. You where not getting full power to the wheels with the ASR on. You need to practice your launches before you try the LT1 again. You did not say if you had an auto or 6-speed trans. If you have a manual to the car, then read through it. Later>>>>>>>

Changing spark plugs isn't going to win you the race. You've gotta A) learn to drive better, and B) do serious mods if that's what you want to get into. Read around on this board a little..........you'll see pretty much all of the guys with LS1's change the air lid to start with, and upgrading the exhaust is a good place to start too. There are also some free mods (ie: free "ram-air" mod, throttle-body bump-stop mod, etc.) that you can do to squeeze out more power. If both your car and your brother's car are relatively stock, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to hand him his a$$ on a nice fancy platter...........................I proved that to my friend with a '96 T/A --- he's got an auto with 2.73's same as I do, and I ran .7 seconds faster than him at the track, when my car was bone stock, and after he'd already upgraded his exhaust.
Keep doing your homework, and practise your launch with the 6-speed........................LS1 vs. LT1, you should run out front no problem.

I didn't really think spark plugs made the difference, but I didn't want to just blame the traction control until I was sure. I basically confirmed my suspicions with the replies in regards to turning off the ASR button by the fog lights.

I guess we are to assume this was at a dragstrip...?
If so, drop your rear tire pressure down to about 23 pounds, turn off the TCS, rev the motor to about 2200 RPM and dump the clutch when the light turns green. As you dump the clutch, punch the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there. Don't hit the gas before you drop the clutch or your tires will go up in smoke. You might get some tire spin. A little won't hurt you too much. If you get too much, drop the RPMs down a little next time. Your car is quicker than his. He's just outdriving you. Sorry. A little practice and he'll be sorry he ever went to the track with you.

Yeah I need a little practice on take off. It was foolish of me to go before doing some. He had his car for 3 months and me for 3 weeks and that was the first time I seriously ran it from a stop. I will drop the pressure in my tires too. I didn't think about that, but i did notice my friend at work does this. I always thought he needed more air in his tires, but the dude is always racing. He has a Mustang 5.0 with ported heads, hotcam and big fuel injectors and wide rear tires. He's been asking to run, but I don't think I can hang with him rightnow. He took me for a spin and the dude has a beast....I don't wanna play myself. I plan on porting my heads and getting a hotcam, but after I get 17x11s.
