I think that Trans-Ams have fog lights more in the middle of the front bumper (either side of the license plate) whereas Formulas have the fog lights more on the outsides, beside the signal lights? I'd say if the car has all Trans-Am badging on it though, I don't see why someone would have changed all that?!

The formula has a front end like this
The trans am front looks like this

Notice the difference in fog lights.

All Trans Am are technically Formula's with an upgraded trim package. Don't worry about it.

Yeah, what Chuck said.

They are ALL "Firebirds" to be specific. Then there's the V8 version, which is a Firebird Formula.

Upgraded trim package becomes a Trans Am. Then another upgrade gets the WS6.

The driving lights in the front is the dead giveaway. If you have the 2 round lights in the center of the bumper (flanking the front license plate), then you have the Trans Am package.

I wanted a Formula when I got mine. Unfortunately, the local Pontiac dealer refused to order a Formula for me. He would sell me the Base V6, or the Trans Am. He would not order a Formula stating that if he ordered it and I backed out of the sale, he'd be stuck with a car he couldn't sell. I wanted the Formula for a sleeper. It looks like a V6.

So, I told him what he could do with it, and walked next door to the Chevy lot and bought a Z28, stripped the badges, and made it my sleeper.

Unfortunately, it got totalled a year later. I found a killer deal on a black 2001 WS6 and I couldn't pass it up. So much for my sleeper look. The biggest drawback to the WS6? 3850 is my race weight at the track. The Formula would have been a lot less.

T/As also have ground effects and the majority have raised spoilers...I think 98+ they all had them.

I believe all Trans Ams are registered as Formulas, I know when I checked mine it was registered as a Formula, Trans Am is a trim package like it was stated earlier.

wouldn't one with t-tops, leather (2lbs?), fog lights, weigh in about the same as a TA?
