New '02 Z28 convert w/ 6 speed
Hi, I just joined this forum after buying a brand new '02 Z28 convert. I've always owned Fords and have to antique Mustangs: a '69 Mach 1 w/ 425hp that does 11.9sec in the quarter and a restored '65 Mustang Fastback. I decided to buy a new car, though, and after test driving the '02 Mustang GT convert and hardtop I was disappointed. They just don't have that much power. I tried the Z28 and was very impressed with the power and handling. Anyway, I'm new to Chevy's and don't know much about the LS1 motor. What would I expect this car to do in the quarter mile and what are the easy mods? How much potential does the motor have? What's the difference between this motor and the SS motor? I love to drag race and probably will have this car on the track within a couple of weeks. What rpm are you guys launching this car with, with the M6?
Thanks,
Pete
Thanks,
Pete

hmm, you car will be a little heavier... but should respond well to mods..
free mods can be found on www.installuniversity.com
launching tips? hmm will you be using slicks or DR's? Otherwise, nothing more than 2K I am thinking on street tires.
welcome aboard!

69Redmach1,
Welcome to the LS1 ranks, though it sounds like you got some
pretty cool Mustangs.
There is no difference between the Z-28 & SS engine. The
differences are the ram air and a free flowing exhaust. Thats
where they get the 15-20 HP.
The free mods listed in that sight help. The LS1 responds well
to exhaust ( cat back first, then headers ) and intake changes.
Intake changes only before the throttle body (i.e. air box lid,
ported MAF ends.) the '02 already has the same intake manifold
used on the Z06.
I still haven't figured out launching without spinning the tires
BAD. see sig.
It all comes down to practice, practice, practice - you get the idea.
I've been trying to launch between 1500-2000 rpm.
Good Luck & I know you'll enjoy the LS1.

Hey... welcome to the world of the LS1. :-) It's nice to know that there are people out there who are willing to buy the best car for them rather than just buying a brand name. My father has a beauty of a '69 Mach I 428CJ himself (email if you'd like to see a picture). Now he's moved on to working on his '71 Chevelle. Luckily, I've learned to respect a muscle cars for what they are, regardless of brand name.
And since the F-body just smokes the Mustang year for year, the choice was a no brainer -- and I can feel good about my decision.
