i put in a 180 sat how do you make the fans come on at 180? can i do it or do i take it somewhere to have it done?

 

gotta have them tuned to come on. and you don't want them coming on at the same temp as teh stat. since that is the temp the stat is fully open the...basically the temp the engine will be operating at for the most part (maybe 190 witha 180 stat). the fans are to cool the engine when it gets above that temp....

i would think with a 180 stat, fan setting of 205 or 210 would be good. that way they will come on in most moderate/heavy traffic but not in every day driving and light traffic.

any hand held programmer will reprogram the settings or a mail order tune


personally i would just leave them for now. unless you are in HEAVY traffic all the time, resetting the fans only helps when sitting at the track. i've had 160s in my cars for 3 yrs without any reprogramming, and i never overheat...heavy traffic the temp gets high, but the stock fan settings prevent damage the same with a low stat as they do with a stock one.

 

thanks for the help.the z28 had a 195 sat.when i put in the 180 it still runs at 210 when i am stop or running at 65mph.i thought it would run cooler at 65mph,and then heat up to 210 at idle.i wont it to run at 190 in traffic.how can i make this happen?

 

Are you looking at the temp guage? You have a 2K so it isn't showing the actual temp. I have a 160 with fan temps set between 184/194 and my guage still reads 210 once it reaches operating temp. In 99's and up (or 2k) the dash guage is a dummy.

 

exactly as stated above...the 99+ guages are crap.

they are basically set to read the same temp anywhere from 160-225 degrees!
way to go GM

with my 160 stat, and scanner i can run along at any speed in south florida in 95deg weather and run at 175deg.

even on cooler days, with my fan switch on HI...the temp only gets down to about 172-175. that is basically the operating temp...10-15deg above the stat setting.

 

Something else for tstat buyers to consider - my 2001 owners manual states the stock tstat is already 180*??? only the V6's have the 195*

 

The P/N of the stock tstat I pulled out of my car is 12587583 - anyone have a way to check it?

 

great i thought it had a 195 stat in it.so i put the same stat back in it.i think i did something for nothing.you live and learn.thanks for the in put.

 

you were rihgt.the guage is not right.my temp was reading 210,and the water temp was 175,i check it with a laser temp guage at the stat.thanks for all your help.
