just registered. i have been reading threads for several weeks now and i have learned a lot. here is a question;
i went to the local chev dealer (not where i bought my z) and asked for a build sheet. i gave him my vin. it has "ls1-5.7 liter sfi v8-350 hp" yet i keep hearing you guys saying the ls1 is factory rated at 320 hp or so. mine is an 01 is it different?

the guy at the dealership actually printed out the gm vehicle inquiry system vehicle build sheet.. and gave it to me. it has all of the options my vehicle is equipped with, build date etc. that is where i got the hp rating. i am sure that all ls1's for 01 are one and the same. i just thought it was interesting that gm rated it at 350 on the build sheet. thanks for the reply, i look forward to learning more and plan on performing some mods after my garage is done. "shade tree mechanics" is no fun in the snow!

I know this may be semantics, however, My 02 z was rated at 310 stock. Why would GM put less horse in a later year model, not to mention an anniversary year car??

His '01 model should be rated 310 if it is a Z28, and 325 or 335 if it is an SS (depending on SLP options). Your '02 is the same way, except in '02 the SS had a second SLP option that could give it 325, 335 or 345 based on which of the options it had. In actuality if you took the Z or an SS and dynoed them they could come out to be very close to the same anyway. Remember, unlike the good ol'days of Chevy (when SS actually MEANT Super Sport) now SS is mainly an appearance package.
