Talking New Guy here saying Hi!

Just joined and wanted to say hi! I am 19 going on 20 and want to buy a '99 or '00 SS. And just so everyone knows I am paying for the car myself, I am not one of those annoying rich kids! Sound good? I test drove a '00 SS today and damn those things are fast! I think I have been converted from Ford to Chevy! Because I have driven Lightnings and they were fast, but a SS seems faster! It sounds easy to get these cars into the 12s with some mods. The only thing that I don't like is the insurence prices! It is cheaper for me to insure a vette of the same year! I need to find a good deal for insurence. Anyway I am glad to be here and if you guys could give me some advice on these cars as far as how realiable they are? Worth the money? Daily driver?(because that is what it will be) Also how much should I pay for a used '99 or '00 with low miles. All advice and comments will be helpful!

Hahaaha, you said "cheap" and "insurance" in the same word. Don't count on it That's about the only downside to a F-body in my opinion. Welcome to the board too!

You can find a good used 99-00 for around $15k or so. One with some less miles for a little more probably. Reliability? These cars will last as long as you take care of them.

12s with some mods. LoL, you're in the 12s with your first or second mod! Worth the money = definatly! Daily driver, hell yeah! I couldn't imagine a day without my car (either one of them!).

I paid $19k for my 99 SS in July and it had 65,000 miles when I bought it. I owned a V6 before it. I am going to hold onto this car for a long time.

Ya I go nuts when I go off to school in CA without my Z. The price tag for the power and performance you get from f-bodies can't be beat... I paid $12,700 ($14,100 after tax and a 4 yr. bumper-to-bumper warranty) for my 98 Z in July 2002... no problems yet, got it with 38k miles, cloth interior, no t-tops, M6, chrome RS wheels. Insurance on my car though, yikes!. Paying $2800/year.

Dont know about a 99-00 for 15k? I bought my 00 SS in July and they were asking 19900 for it, but I only paid 18900. But my question is, how can you get insurance for a Vette of the same year cheaper than the SS?? Same engine, Vette is rated with more power (I say rated because we all know the SS is most likely underrated), and the Vette is more expensive.. there should be no reason for an ins. co. to offer you cheaper insurance on that car.

WARNING: Modding Camaros is very addictive

You'll probably spend about $16K on the car. Trust me, you'll never want to look at another Ford again. My Z is my daily car. I have 47K miles on it, and I've only had maintenance done on it-oil changes, new belts, spark plugs, and plug wires. The weak points on these cars are the clutches and rear ends. As far as insurance, you will get raped! When I had my other car, I put my name and my mom's name on the title. I was able to get on her policy and it saved me a lot of money. I'm 27 with a clean record and still pay $628 for 6 months!

Im 18 with a clean record. Full Coverage and some extra crap like a $200 deductible, my insurance is $3,900 a year. I am trying to convince my dad to put my moms name under the car.

Why are you only doing a 200 dollar deductible? Get a 500 dollar one and you will most likely save a good bit of money.

My dad is an idiot. I told him to change it to $500 deductible and put it under my moms name but he still hasn't. Its his problem really becuase I only pay $1,000 of the $3,900.

Welcome to the board and it's good to hear that your now a Chevy man. I own 2 f-bodies and they are both daily drivers. I mostly drive my 98 Z28 during the week and my wife drives the 99 SS. On the week-ends one or the other gets driven, depending on what wild hair mood I'm in at the time. I do admit that the SS seems to be driven more lately. I've got about 71K miles on the Z28 and about 55K miles on the SS. Both cars run as strong as ever. The mods listed in my sig have made a big difference, especially the lid, probably the best and one of the cheapest mods you can do. Good luck with your f-body purchase and keep us updated.

Well I would not complain either then..

BTW.. you dont happen to have a picture of your guages do you? I want to show my gf what the white gauges will look like in my car. I have tried to just show her the gauges and tell her to imagine but a installed picture would help.

I just wanted to answer a question from earlier. I said that a C5 is cheaper to insure then a SS. The reason for this I have heard is because there is a lot more kids out there cashing SS Camaros then vettes because most kids can't afford the vette. If you don't believe me run a quick insurence quote off of something like www.geico.com You won't believe it.

Yea I got a picture I'll go get a free website and put a link to it on here. The picture isn't going to be very good my digital camera is a video recorder that hooks up to the computer and its a very poor picture but it will still give you an idea of how they look. BTW, they are lil bit of a pain to install. The hardest part is putting the needles back on in the right position especially the speedo. All in all I would still have done it even if I knew how hard it was before hand.
