Oil Change coming up. Recommendations?

I just got my 1999 Z28. 6-speed, chrome, ground effects. Wow. Anyways, I have my first oil change coming up soon. I want to do this soon before I put it away for the winter. Any suggestions on which oil is the best for winter time?

Depends on where you live for the weight of oil but 5w-30 or 0w-30 should be good.

I recommend Mobil 1 Syn, Royal Purple Syn or Redline Syn. I use Mobil 1 as it is easy to find. Go with AC Delco oil filter get the P54 it's the truck one = more filter media and it only hangs down about an inch or so more than the stock one.

So go with Mobil 1 synthetic? I live in Wisconsin, but my garage is heated. The car will be covered and that's about it. If I for some reason have to drive it, will that weight of oil be too light? Also, for regular driving, Mobil 1 as well? If so, what weight?

Talking

I use mobile 1 5w-30 on my 01 ls1 year round here in Montana. On the box it says that 5w 30 is a new car formula. Most new cars now recommend 5w-30. But i notice that quite a few ls1's are running 10w-30. Since it appears you will not have any extreme cold starts so you could go with either. I have a block heater in my ls1 for really cold days. IMO mobile 1 is the one to go with.

So Mobil 1 is the way to go. 5w-30, huh? Ok. So go with synthetic or no? Differences?

Definitely use synthetic, it is better than conventional oil in pretty much every respect, except cost. Then again you get what you pay for. Since your garage is heated, you don't really have to worry too much about extremely cold starts I think that the Mobil 1 5w-30 or 10w-30 should do fine.

If you actually read your owners manual you will notice GM says to use 5w-30. I prefer Castrol Syn but I hear Mobile 1 is good also. Last I checked Castrol Syn was the ONLY oil in the world to pass all 3 of the Syn tests. Times could have changed.

You live in Wisconsin. Get 5w-30. Any synthetic should do.

Another question. Would a synthetic warm my engine temp up faster than a convetional oil? By warming up I mean average running temp.

It's actually not the PF54, but you want either a PF58 or PF59. The PF59 is preferable though because it has the antidrainback valve.

I'd recommend going with a Bosch Premium 3423 filter or a K&N HP2006 though. Both of these are much better than the AC Delco.

I may go with the bosch filter, but what about weight? I just moved to South Florida, and previously I was using 5-30 in NY. Everyone here has been telling me to use 10-30 here b/c it's hotter, should I? Cause I have about 34,000 miles on the car and the 5-30 says it's new car formula, so should I stick with it or go to the 10-30? What'll protect it better, and give me better pressure?

Hey thanks Patman, you are right it's the PF58, that's what I use. Didn't know there was a 59!

I'd definitely go with the 10w30 in Florida. As a matter of fact, I'm running 10w30 all year round up here in Toronto, even though it occasionally gets close to 0F in the winter (I drive my car all year round daily) 10w30 is a better built oil than 5w30, as it uses less viscosity index improvers so it's a more stable oil that will also keep your engine cleaner and will show less oxidation and less oil burning as well.
