operating temp after 160* stat
hey guys i just installed my Hypertech 160* thermostat. i filled the coolant system the way the directions said (to eliminate air in the system) and the temperature guage still reads the same temp.
driving and even with my fan switch turned on HI the temp stays just a hair below 210*
i know when i installed the 160 in my lt1 the temp guage read just a hair above the first mark...right where 160 should be. but it didn't seem to move on my LS1...what gives?
with the car idling when warm the temp stays right at 210 mark, no higher so i don't think there is air in the system. is there another way to bleed air out of the coolant like on the LS1?
or is this a normal occurance...to not have the guage show a drop in temp?
help i'm confused!!!

temp guage sucks rectum. they made it so that it pretty much stays at the same general temp unless you go WAY outside the normal operating temp, because they were getting people coming in because the temp was fluctuating...

Just adding a thermostat to your car WILL NOT make the fans turn on earlier. You need a program such as HPP3, Predator, or LS1 edit to make the fans turn on and actually cool the car and keep it at 160ish. Imo, you wasted your money because you don't need a stat to make your car run cooler.

thanks, but i'm not trying to turn the fans on earlier...i already have a fan switch. i want the temp to be lower when i'm moving. THAT DOESN'T REQUIRE A HPP+
even when i'm movinig the temp doesn't change from what it did before, and sitting still with the fans on HI (use to drop my temp to 160ish on my lt1 while sitting) the temp stays at about 210.
i don't think it's a waste of money!! a cooler engine is a more effiencent engine.
GOD I WISH THIS MYTH THAT STATS ARE USELESS WITHOUT A FAN REPROGRAM WOULD DIE...CAUSE IT'S NOT TRUE!!

all the fans in the world will nt keep the car at 160 deg if you have the stock thermostat. coolant needs to be going through the radiator for that to happen, and with the stock t-stat, it not even close to happening at 160...
teke, a cooler engine is not automaticaly a more efficient engine. but this is a whole other discussion...
I belive most tuners like to keep the LS1 at 180 or so for best results.

I have an 01 SS. My tempgauge read just below 210 with stock thermostat. I monitored it with my Mac Tools OBDII scanner and it was aroung 205 at idle. I installed a 160 t-stat and monitored it again. Even though the gauge in the cluster was in the exact same spot now true temp at idle (on a hot summer day) is about 175.

You should have asked last week and I would have brought my Predator down over the weekend. The temp on my SS fluctuates a lot when I watch it on the Predator. The guage on the dash never moves. I haven't installed my TStat yet.

With a new thermostat and the resulting partial exchange of coolant and you are still over 210 while driving at speed (45mph+), then there is something else wrong.
collapsing hoses
clogged radiator
water pump
air entrapment
Something is going on that isn't right.

You shouldn't much of a change in temp with a new thermo. It only puts the coolant through earlier, so your engine will stay cool longer, but it will always run at about the same temp. Coolant doesn't cool your engine down, it keeps it running at the same temp. Change your fan turn on points and then you should see some good numbers.

doesn't anyone READ anymore? I HAVE THE 160 STAT AND THE FAN SWITCH!!
those two things combined use to lower my operating temp to 160ish on the guage in my lt1...but that doesn't happen on my new ls1.
but from what everyone is saying...that's normal...since the guages are basically there for looks...
thanks to those of you who actually read my problem and contributed.
ps...sorry for the pissed off attitude...been a long day
