I don't believe that Mobil 1 is any longer a true synthetic and is a Group 3 oil.

I've heard that as well, but not from any reliable sources. I also heard that all of the other popular, formerly true synthetics (Castrol, Pennzoil, Valvoline) have also switched to Group 3. From what I've heard, even AmsOil is no longer a true synthetic.

I'm really not sure what to believe.

Syntec is the product line by Castrol, which you'll note is included in my list above.

I run Mobil 1 in my GTP and my Maxima. The engine in my RS wasnt maintained properly by the previous owner. It burns oil like a SOB. No point in putting Mobil 1 in until my LSx swap...

royal purple is junk.. leaves a residue (purple one at that) on all your parts.. I know many shops and shop owners, none of them use it (they sell it.. sure..) but they wont touch the stuff for their cars.

If you're going to choose between the two oils above go with pennzoil. It is not any better or any worse than mobil1. It is often cheaper by at least a dollar a quart. If you want a true synthetic runs Amsoil. Mobil 1 and Pennzoil are group three's mixed with group 4. Amsoil is a group 4.

Mobil one is no longer Poly-Alpha-Olefin based oil its hydrocracked.

Amsoil is still PAO based.
