Pick me a camshaft...

This is my first actual engine mod on this car...
1999 WS6, all I got on it is a 50 wet shot. I want to do a cam swap over the winter, and then heads next summer sometime.

I want something that's still streetable, gas mileage is not a concern, or idle quality.

Something that'll give me a good 50 ponies now, and something I wouldn't have to swap out later when I do heads, exhaust, etc....

But ya, I know nothin about LS1 cam's... but I know all about engine's and what not, so help me out.

Thanks
O.P. Sihota

If you know all about engines, then put the same cam theories etc to the LS1.

Do some research and pick your own cam because most people will tell you to run what ever cam grind they like. So in essence you'll be building up YOUR car based on somone elses preferences. Doesn't sound like a good choice to me.

Well what are some good grinds that make good power by the factory rev limit?

by factory redline...not many.

most will at least be required to pull to about 6400-6500 to extract peak power.

so you want to put a cam in before you do things like headers and exhaust?? good luck getting the power level you asked for...you'll be choking it BAD.

a good order is

intake
exhaust
cam
heads

assuming you got the major boltons...a cam that will yield solid results would be ones like the TSP Torquer, or the Futral F13 or F14. most heads will bolt up with minimal problems (ptv) and tuned should yield about 400rwhp cam only and 440rwhp with heads...possibly more.

Look at Thunder Racing's 224/224 cam. Probably THE premier all around LS1 cam.

You need to do bolt-ons like a CAI, catback, and headers before you do any other internal work.

The Futral F-13 is the best all-around driveable/streetable LS1 cam that usually makes 400+ rwhp with an LS6 intake, LT headers, ported TB, CAI, catback, and a tune.

Don't overlook Patriots 226/226-585/585 cam , it's very street friendly with a tune , makes it's power under the curve so you don't have to rev the **** out of your engine and it has a nice lope at idle .

I agree with everyone else do your supporting mods first and then the cam, it will make the pay off of the cam alot better. Also is this an A4 or M6 car, what suspension mods do you have, there is alot of other things that need to be done to an F-body before throwing 400hp at it in my opinion.

The car's an M6... and it is bone stock with the exception of a wet kit I have yet to put on.

I agree with the above, you need to do some other bolt ons first such as headers and exhaust etc. but I would say if you are looking for something that is still very well mannered for daily driving then stay around a 230 duration or under. I really like the TSP 228R cam (228/228 .588/.588 i am an auto so I would go with a 114LSA as it is easier to tune. with M6 I would opt. for a 112LSA though. You need to do your research though as you will need other things to make it all run smooth such as ported oil pump possibly, LS2 timing chain, higher lift springs. you could opt. for titanium retainers, need chromoly pushrods. etc. Best of luck. there is many options out there. this is just my .02$
