Ported Heads with a stock cam?
Hey guys, I am thinking about buy a set of ported heads. I really don't want to change the cam just yet ( if at all) because I don't want to lose any low end torque or RPM range. The stock cam seems to really turn on at 4000 RPM as it is!
I would also add the LS6 intake and a new TB at the same time..... I might even add the 1.8 roller rockers (yes I know this increases the lift and duration) but I want to keep the stock cam. It is my DD.
Has anyone done this? What kind of gains would I get buy doing this set up. I would like to add 40 HP.
Thanks!

You do know there are mild cams that make great numbers with stock manners out there right? A friend of mine is running the very mild LPE GT2-3 w/ported heads. Idles stock with manners like stock and is emisions friendly. He made 400 whp.
Do you also know that you'll get more bang for the buck doing a cam swap vs. longer rockers? You'll still have to change the springs with a longer ratio rocker swap and you should change the push rods also.
As for losing low end, I'm now running a 226/226 .590/.590 112 on my daily driver. Trust me, you DO NOT LOSE LOW END. My car pulls so much easier with less pedal than it ever did before. With more pedal it pulls harder at low RPM than it did before at higher RPM.
If you want monster torque and all the power in before 6500 RPM, get a grind with short duration and a tight LSA. Custom grinds don't cost anymore than off the shelf grinds. I've seen a dyno of a cam like this and it made 400/400 on stock heads and it was all in by 6k RPM.

Rob, why the **** are you still posting questions when you live like 30 mins from Futral?

well, back to your question, I think a good set of ported heads and rockers will get you 40rwhp gain. but the bang for buck is horrible. If you want just a little power gain, grab an LS6 cam and spring package (or a similiar cam). you can get those for pretty cheap, and it will weild a gain to please your goals, and have the endurance of oem equipment.

I know Mike I'm just seeing what else is out there and I'm also still learning as well. Talked to the guys there the other day at Futral when I was there and I'm pretty sure I'll have them do all of my work. So far they have the best prices. Not to mention helpful as hell.

as said lots of cams will do what you want, the only thing I will say is DO NOT go to 1.8 rockers, they are a waste of money as often no or very minimal gains are seen from them, also when you do decide to go cammed they will limit your choices, unless you go back to the stock 1.7 rockers. if you want more lift get a cam with the lift built in.

Re: Ported Heads with a stock cam?
agreed.
and i agree with StudyTime as well. if you are looking for a good street car, it's much better to have a mild cam and ported heads that idles and runs smooth in traffic...than a touchy rough running cam only car.
i love my cam only...but if i had to do traffic...i think i would die.
although now that i got some mufflers and not jsut straight pipes..it helps

I have 228/232 .579 cam and it makes great power. I put down 414rwhp/385rwtq. I do have full exhaust though. Then again this is going through an IRS set up which robs a little more power than a live axle.

The the difference between stock ls1/ls6 heads on a mild cam f-body was about 16-20 rwhp i think, not a big difference.
