Post porting maf ends

In the works of porting my maf ends because my broke *** can't afford aftermarket parts for now. Question, can I get rid of the honeycomb screen that comes from the factory? Also is this porting thing a really good idea or am I just making thigs worse or wasting my time? Thank you in advance for giving me all the info you can.......

You are going to see posts from both sides.. Some people had problems other didnt.. the screen is commonly removed as the aftermarket units do not have them.

If I do get a different MAF I think I would get the SLP or Z06 unit. Definately not the Granatelli(sp?) since so many people are having issues with them. other places make the ends and that may be an option for ya.. I would suggest saving the screen as many say they may want to keep it like stock for some reason or another.

IMO I would want one with a recalibrated unit so that its already adjusted for higher flows.
Hope this helps some..

Every car is different. From my experience, however, there seems to be a pattern.

If your car dynoed 290 RWHP or under when it was bone stock, then the MAF ends probably won't cause any problems.

However, if you dynoed over 290, then you may have some problems (mainly pinging)

If you're going to port/polish, do what I did ... find someone who bought aftermarket ends and then buy their OEM ends from them. That way you will have an original set of MAF ends to go back to in case your car doesn't like the port/polish.

My 2001 Z28 did quite well with the port/polish, even with the Hypertech programmer.

The 2001 WS6, however, can't run ported ends without detonation. It also doesn't like the Hypertech programmer. After a day with AutoTap, we found that the car runs much better without the programmer.

This may sound strange and a little off subject, but I would like to try porting and polishing while leaving the MAF screen intact.
I took my screen out, then ported and polished. This caused the car to have detonation from hell along with a severely wandering idle. The flow straighteners might have allowed the electronics to read more accurately which is thier purpose in the first place.
Just a thought

I think your getting detonation b/c of the port and polish maf ends. I know it is a problem in some cars. from what i have seen 99 and down cars react better b/c of their cam profile. So i would leave it alone unless you get a cam, then you can do the trhottle body too, and probably step up to the 80mm from SLP. Unless you have auto tap and a maft i would leave them alone.
