Thumbs down Power Windows dying! Ideas?

My window stopped halfway while opening it this morning. After playing with the button a bit, I got it to close. So when I got home I tried opening and closing it again. It opened completely but very slowly. I tried to close it, but it wouldn't budge. I waited for a minute or two while I tested the passenger side window (it was okay, but sluggish). I then tried the driver's side again. This time it went up half way, then stopped. I hope I can get it closed. Then I'll pull the fuse till I can get it fixed.

I suspect the motors are going out. I have seen it mentioned on the board before, but not in any great detail.

Does anyone have some info about this. Is it a common Camaro problem. Is there any way of getting the window shut if the motor is already gone. Is it the same set-up as on the LT1 Camaros?

Thanks in advance.

Its a common GM problem, not just Camaros. Currently my SS drivers side window only goes up 1/4 inch every five minutes. 4 out of the 5 GM cars my family owns have had multiple power window problems. Luckily they have all been under warranty.

The power windows going out is a common problem with all f-bodies. Same with the signals lights going out.

Yep.. had the same problem with my old v6 Camaro. About all you can do is go get the window motor replaced. Motor runs abour 70-90 best I can remember and then install. You could probably do it yourself, but the motor is rivoted in so it made it a little more difficult.

You can pick up a new motor from AutoZone for $50, and it comes with a lifetime warranty. Change it yourself and save some money. It is about an hour job, and you can see instructions here: http://home.swbell.net/shoebox/windowmotor.html I changed the motor on my wife's camaro and it was a pretty easy job.

I just had the motor replaced on the drivers door. I have an extended warranty so it only cost $50 to get it replaced.

The power windows are behaving just the way all of you have described. So simply my power window motors are going out.

I was able to close the driver's side window (wait a few minutes then push close). This morning I pulled the power window fuse. This way I won't inadvertently open the windows and then not be able to close them. I am always going somewhere and I have to maintain my car's security.

Thanks for the input everyone

From what I understand the post '98 motors are easier to get to than '98's. The '98's motors are on the inside of the door which make them a PITA to replace. If you do decide to replace them yourself make sure your outline where the original rivits were. So when you put the new one in you can put it back where the old one was. Otherwise the window will be misaligned and leak.

In all honesty I will not do another one. I'd sooner take it to the dealer for this job. Let someother poor schmuck do it.

I drilled a hole threw the fiberglass inside of the door so it was much easier to get to. drill a hole just big enough to get a screw driver through. If you have rivits you can drill the heads off so you can remove the old motor, then replace the rivits will a small bolt. I used a bolt with a philips heads so I could tighten it down with a screwdriver, and slipping my hand around the back with a small endrench. only took me an hour or so. Don't take it to a mechanic they will just charge you to much and will most likelly end up scraching your tint.-----oh also do this with the window all the way down.

Thanks for all the input people

I will be making an appointment with the dealer soon. I have an extended warrantee some it shouldn't cost too much. I woulod rather have someone install new motors who may have done it before. If its a common problem they probably have.

I just hate it when accessories break down.
