Rear End Problems

Okay here is the problem. I just bought my 1998 Z28 Auto and I have only drove it twice and I keep hering this whinning noise coming from my rear end. Were pretty sure it's the gears. I'm wanting to change them out anyways but I need a little more info on it. The car will be a daily driver and will hardly see the track. But there is a lot of old 5.0's around. So basically what I'm asking for is some help on what gears to get and everything else to install them, were to get them from, and how will I go about changing them out. My uncle will change them out but he wanted me to get some info before he got started on it. Thanks in advance and sorry for the newbie question. You can also email me at slammed_xtreme13@yahoo.com

Why do you want to change the gears you have now?
Because of the whine, or looking for more power?
If its just the whine, would you put the same/quite new gears in?

I had 4.10s in my auto.....I hated it. After a year 2 teeth broke off and I went with 3.73s. With an Auto, and 3.73s, I would suggest getting the Hypertech power programmer so you can adjust your shift points, rev limit, and shift firmness.

I love the new gears. The 4.10s were great for burnouts, but I could never hook up, they also bad gear whine. I love the 3.73s. I would say go for that...but then it also depends what you are currently running.

The gear swap cost me $320. $220 for the new gears (Torq-Line gears), and $100 bucks to install them. The Hypertech cost me $320 new, but you can find these cheap in the for sale section here, or at www.ls1.com for around $150. Just make sure to get it for your cars year.

See my sig for my times with that gear.......I went really slow off the line - thats why the high ¼ mile time. My mph would net me 12.7 - 12.9. I went slow because it was the first time I had gotten on the car since the gear change, and I wanted to make sure I could get home.

I hope I've helped.

Gears

It's currently all stock right now. I wouldn't mind getting a little more power but I wanted here other peoples opinions because I'm pretty new to the new camaro's and whats best to run them with. So I've been reading post and looking around. So basically your saying I should just put in the 3.73 gears and go from there.

Is the Thunder Racing Gear Package (3.73 motive gears, complete gear installation kit, ta performance rear end cover girdle and stud kit for $460.00) worth getting or should I just buy the gears like you said Zfbody. But I will be putting them in with my uncle. I don't know if that matters at all.

It really boils down to money, and how much you want to spend - and if you want new or not. Like me, I spent $220 on gears. I had no idea on how to install them. A friend of a friend did the install for a $100 bucks. I also got a TA performance rear end cover on my car - but I bought it off the site here for $60 bucks. My total spent was $380. You can also find some gears for sale here as well for around $150'ish. I couldn't do that, because I needed them ASAP to get my car up and running - not only for my personal/work life, but also to get ready for the track.

I paid a total of $80 bucks cheaper then what you've listed.....but my cost was "installed". If you've never done gears before, I wouldn't now - unless you like spending money. If you don't get them perfect, they will have a bad wear pattern, and whine like crazy....or even brake.

If you have a dealer install them, it could be as much as $65 dollars per hour...and I'm guessing that would be a 6-8 hour job. I didn't have any extra cash to spend, so saving me $80 bucks was a great way to go for me.

As for what gears....All I can say is this:

I've driven in my dads Stock 6spd '97 Vette with (I believe) 3.43s. I have also driven in my '98 Auto Z with 4.10s. I hated both of them. The Stock Vette was way to easy = almost no power, and the 4.10s in my car were waaaayyyyy to much. The 3.73s seem to be the best/happy medium. I vote 3.73s.

Hope this helps.
